“Choice Making” Strategy For Doug’s Case

Talking about Doug’s case, he appears as a clever kid, but unfortunately he gets easily distracted. According to Mr. McGrady, Doug’s teacher, the most important goals for this particular period of time should be a self-regulating start of all work assignments on time and increasing the number of finished tasks. Established goals can, most of the time, help child to achieve better academic standards. Mr. McGrady offered different kinds of strategies, but my personal opinion that the most effective one would be “Choice Making”.

This approach can help Doug to achieve those goals and improve his education skill.

In order for Doug to succeed with doing independent work at the appointed time, the teacher should offer different opportunities which Doug can choose from. First goal is to begin promptly with independent work assignments. To do this, Doug needs to make mindful choice, set up a plan, and stick with it. A way the teacher can assist in this without making the decisions for Doug is by being involved in it and staying patient.

This tactic often helps teacher and a student to generate positive connection and rapport.

Teacher has to make available different choices for any request he is asked for. Proposing an encouragement or motivation will inspire the right choices. Nevertheless, we should not forget that motivation shouldn’t be offered on a daily basis, better if this will happen once a week, let’s say Monday (the 1st day after weekend). In this case, Doug will have time to accomplish goals independently throughout the weekend. It could be, for example, a special time for playing with his Lego, or maybe Mr. McGrady can stimulate him with some stickers which he likes. On the other hand, it could be in a way of a punishment- which is if Doug won’t finish his homework punctually there will be no time for him to play his favorite game. Those examples show varieties of choices that Doug has to decide to follow. Positive reinforcement is a very big part in improvement a negative child’s behavior. Thus, in order for Doug to have something he wants, he needs to follow the rules, such as- choosing between finishing whatever he supposed to, or if not, all praises will be lost. (all of the praises will disappear)

It is very important to teach Doug to make a choice by himself. Motivation and positive reinforcement promotes the child to be more productive and quality oriented. Encouragement in decision making is a driving force that causes the child to do a good job because he/she feels valued and satisfied when the job is accomplished. Positive feedback allows more input into choice making, it identifies the strengths and put the child to optimum use to accomplish the tasks allotted to him /her.
