Basic Barriers Of Communication

Some of these factors that affect communication are, Language, misunderstanding of body language, jargon, formal or informal language, and environmental factors. These factors are usually faced everyday but can be overcome.

If two people talk to each other and one of them uses informal language, this could be a barrier as the other person interacting with them might not understand what is being said. This could be overcome by using terms and words from formal language so that the person you are talking to can come to terms with what is being said.

One of a non verbal way to communication is body language.

Positive body language, physical appearance and humour can improve communication. Eye contact is very important and should be used often unless there are cultural differences which create a barrier to communication. When using oral communication, your words should be clear and not heavy accented as people will have trouble understanding. Sometimes it can also be a barrier if you do not use the correct words within communicating, so choosing words should be selected in such a way that miscommunication is avoided. Another barrier is listening, and listening is very important in order to know what people are saying verbally. So when engaged in a conversation, listening with accuracy and attention is a huge overcome to this factor.

Jargon is a word that is used to describe words that have a specific meaning. They can easily confuse people. For example when a patient goes to the doctors and the doctor says that the patient has a illness and says the name of it in a medical way and explains with a scientific explanation, the patient will find the illness's name more scary. so breaking things down and using simpler words and phrases that have a better explanation is a huge overcome to jargon barriers.

Poor lighting and room full of noise is a barrier to communication, this is also known as environmental factors. Overcoming this, you will need to make sure that there's plenty of light and no noise in the background that can disturb you. This will benefit your hearing.

D1 Explain how communication skills can be used in a health or social care environment to assist effective communication.

Effective communications are so very important in health and social care settings. You need to make sure you communicate with your target audience in such a way that they can understand what is being said and you also need to acknowledge your target audiences physical and intellectual conditions. For instance, you would not expect a young child to be conscious of a medical report or blood function tests. So making sure that effective communication within age groups and stages will help the different types of skills in these settings. For an elderly person, or people going through late adulthood, loss of hearing and sight are natural. So when trying to interact with them, be sure to face directly to your patient and talk in a civil manor that has no barrier and is easy to understand. Communication is a very important skill in medical or social care and a lot relies on it.

Jargon is not the best idea when speaking to clients who might not understand. In healthcare settings, its vital that you use language appropriately to the people you are interacting with. It's also good to take into consideration any types of special needs or any types of difficulties with language the person you are interacting with may have. And ensure that the environmental factors have no barriers, such as no poor lightning, or not too busy or noisy and always remember to keep your conversations confidential and quite.

The 6 factors that I will be talking about are: Ethnicity, Sexuality, Gender, Age, Social class and culture.

age

Well usually age contributes to diversity in a big way. With passing age you tend to become wiser and learn a lot more from the experiences of life.

As you grow you come across many different people from diverse cultures, you tend to learn about them and their behaviour patterns. Diversity is a vital part of growing up, it teaches you to live and adjust with people whose thoughts are completely different from yours. When you're young you tend to make hasty decisions without even thinking, growing age makes you more mature and you think twice before taking every decision.

During your teen age days or early twenties you tend to live for yourself, once you're married you're family becomes your priority since they are dependent on you; hence every decision matters because every step that you take has an indirect effect on them.
