Global Impact: Historical Perspectives and Contemporary Challenges of Migration

Categories: Syrian Civil War

A major enduring issue that has affected the world throughout time is Migration.”Migration is the movement of persons from one country to another” (Vocabulary, 2019). An example of the impact of migration throughout time is the Bantu migration. The Bantu migration was when the Bantu people migrated into Central Africa, and then South Africa .(Cartwright 2019).This Migration caused cultural diffusion such as the spread bantu language, and religion to other parts of Africa. A more recent example of the impact of migration is the European Union Immigrant crisis where people are migrating from southeast Europe to the EU (Europa, 2019).

Since the beginning of 2015 until now people from middle Eastern countries like Syria are migrating to the EU because of war, crisis, hunger, disease, and bad economical circumstances. As a result of people migrating to the EU, Europe has been suffering and increased in crime, overpopulation, and worries of becoming the dumping ground for immigrants migrating from the middle east.

A Cause of this immigrant crisis is the bashar al assad regime vs the rebel opposition in syria from march 15, 2011 until recent date (Unav). The cause of this war was the extreme punishment of the syrian people. This caused defectors from the syrian army to create a rebel group called the Free syrian Army (FSA), that's aiming to overthrow the government.(Middle east) The Free Syrian army was formed in july 2011(middle East). Bashar al assad rose to power after the death of his father Hafiz Al-Assad who was borned in October 6, 1930 in Syria and died june 10, 2000 in DamascuHazif Al-Assad was the. President of Syria from 1971-2000 Hafiz brought Stability to Syria and established it as a powerful presence in the Middle East.

When the civil war began there were four main factions of fighting groups throughout the country. These Fighting sections are the kurdish forces, ISIS, and other oppositions such as the alliance between the Nusra Front and Ahrar-Al-Sham called the jaish al Fateh and the Assad Regime. In Early november 2011 syrian officials agreed to an Arab League initiative calling for the syrian government to stop violence against protesters, remove tanks and armoured vehicles from cities, and release political prisoners. There was a second agreement made by former UN secretary-general Koffi Annan and sponsored by the UN and The Arab League to produce a shot partial Ceasefire in april 2012, but this didn't keep the peace between the Government and the syrian people and the violence shortly resumed and increased.

All this violence, unfair treatment, and failing of the Arab league to put a stop to the unfair treatment of the syrian people by the government led to roughly 5.7 million syrians to leave the country and migrate to some other places that could offer something better like the EU, and According High commissioner for Refugees, and more than 6 million people are displaced internally. Another cause to this immigrant cause is terrorism in middle east. Especially focusing on terrorist groups like ISIS. ISIS also known as Islamic State In Iraq (ISIL) and islamic state (IS) is a militant organizations that started as an al Qaeda splinter group in 2014 which took control of large parts of Iraq and syria, raising its black flag in victory and declaring the creation of a caliphate and imposing strict Islamic rule.

Isis is known for killing dozens of people at a time, and carrying out public executions(Cnn). ISIS's goal is an Ultra-conservative caliphate that strictly enforces sharia, or islamic law. In 2014 ISIS controlled more than 34,000 square miles in syria, and iraq. In 2015 ISIS was believed to be holding 3,500 people as slaves, according to the United Nations Report, most of the enslaved were women and children from the yazidi community, but some were from the ethnic and religious minority communities. ISIS uses social media to promote reactionary politics and religious fundamentalism, this videos inspire fighters to destroy holy sites and valuable antiquities even as their leaders propagate and return back to the old days of islam(ISIS Fast Facts, 2019). Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was the leader of ISIS from April 2010 until his death in October 2019.Baghdad only made only one public appearance, in july 24 when he delivered a sermon in mosul’s grand mosque.

Baghdadi was detained for several months in camp bucca, which was a US prison in southern iraq, he was released in 2004. He killed himself after being cornered by US forces who conducted a two-hour nighttime raid on his compound in northern Syria after ISIS announced its new leader would be Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurashi. This caused the US and other countries against the unfair treatment of the people from syria, Iraq and enslaved people to help them migrate to another countries far away from all the conflict, destruction, and chaos far away enough to not be allowed to be persecuted by members of ISIS or any other terrorist group in the Middle East.

This migration affects the conditions in which people live in refugee camps. Problems like overcrowding, lack of food, lack of water, disease, and unsanitary conditions affect the survival of the immigrants from other countries that came seeking safety, and for a better lifestyle for them and their Families. Official Dunja mijatovic the human rights commissioner of the council of Europe said after going to several refugee camps for many refugees in the camps this has become a struggle for survival. EU- funded refugee camp on the Greek island of samos built 640 people is home to 3,745 with unaccompanied children forced to sleep on the floor of windowless and overcrowded Containers. As many as 500 go without food because of food shortages, some refugees do not even try to get on the line for food distribution for fear of being assaulted, and also what might shock to many people is that the population of more than 14,000 in moria was left for months with only one doctor, and the screening of mental health-related issues had stopped because of the absence of medical staff, psychologist, and social workers.

Lack of medical and psychosocial services caused great gasps in vulnerability assessments, which are used to determine provisions and policies related to asylum seekers, such as lifting of geographical restrictions, placement in suitable shelters, and appropriate protection measures. Conditions in Lesbos go against EU and Greeks laws that require greece to provide an adequate standard of living for asylum seekers, guaranteeing their establishment, and protecting their physical and mental health(greece:dire conditions for asylum seeker on lesbos,2018).These laws takes into account the specific situations of vulnerable people, including pregnant women, unaccompanied minors, people with disabilities, older people, single parents with minor children, victims of torture, rape and sexual violence, and other at-risk people(greece:dire conditions for asylum seeker on lesbos,2018).

This poor unsanitary conditions affect people in a really negative way because they are trying to escape from a bad place were they could of been torture, treated unfairly, punished, or just to be enslaved to a still bad place were they will probably live there, work hard, try to save their family, until they or their family starve to death or die because of desease or some major injury. Another effect of this migration to the EU is the crime increase in Germany. The deputy leader of the far-right party alternative for germany (AfD) said there has been “447 killings and murders” by illegal migrants in Germany last year (Reality check team, 2018).

The German State of the Lower Saxony witnessed a 10.4 percent increase in crime at the height of the migration crisis (German study links increased crime rate to migrant arrivals, 2018). Other sources like the German interior ministry says that in fact last year 27 illegal immigrants either committed or attempted to commit murder or man slughter, the 447 figure refers to killings or attempted killings by all asylum seekers, and refugees, most of whom are in Germany legally. The German interior ministry also states that overall crime in germany has fallen to the lowest level since 1992, but there has been an increase in migrant Crime. Overall crime crime in germany has been decreasing since the early 1990s, but that changed in 2015 at the same time hundred of thousands of refugees began entering the country. In 2014, there were 6.1 million offences recorded by the police, by 2016, this had risen to 6.4 million these includes immigration violations which inevitably impact immigrants.

Violent crime rose from 180,000 cases to 193,000 between 2014 and 2016, also the number of murders increased by 14.6 percent and rapes by 8 percent over the same period, however last year saw the total recorded crimes, including immigration violations dropped by 10 percent, equally violent crime showed a 2.5 percent decrease between 2016, and 2017. This increase of crime in germany affects both the german citizens and the refugees, this could bring chaos and despair to the german citizens and this increase in crime could cause the refugees to be blamed for more stuff, be treated differently, and make Germany denied the access of refugees to their country because of all the conflict brought to their country.

A solution attempted by the greek government to solve the overcrowding, and unsanitary conditions of the refugee camps is to replace intensely overcrowded migrant camps on the Aegean Islands with new centers that will be more restrictive about migrant’s movement. A reason for this is that the continuing of the influx of new arrivals from turkey, it is an effort by the new conservative government to tighten its control over the migrant flows while also addressing conditions at the camp, including refugee camps like Moria on lesbos and vathi on samos. This attemp is stillongoing but this is going to benefit the refugees and the people from greece because it will give the refugees more homes, and it will be easier to make them feel comfortable, and it will be more sanitary and more of a human like lifestyle, and it will benefit the country by decreasing the percent of crimes, like rape, manslaughter, and other violations of the greek government.

A solution attempted by the German Government to stop crimes, and the migration of syrian immigrants to germany is to help raise the influence of the anti-immigratio party (Germany’s syrian refugee integration experiment). This anti-migration parties managed to pull off a deal with neighboring countries to tighten security along the border with austria and build border camps for asylum seekers previously register in other EU countries(Germany’s syrian refugee integration experiment).

They also passed laws like the integration laws, which entered into force on august 2016, where stipulates that those refugees who find a firm to employ them may not be deported during the three year vocational training period , he or she will be granted a two year residence permit (Germany’s syrian refugee integration experiment). This works because it provides work,a dn german residences like that the refugees have works to afford a living and necessary stuff for living and it decreases the crime percentage because instead of robbing and stealing for money they will focus on honest work.

In conclusion i think immigration has impacted the world in big ways that might be good or bad during time and i think that both solutions are really good ideas because they both benefit the countries and the refugees and they wouldn’t cause as much conflict as other ideas might like ideas that only benefit the refugees or only benefit the country and its citizens. For the future immigration will still happen but in the future countries will learn how to address the situation better, and learn or come up with new ideas on how to make both refugees and the country.

What could probably done in the future to solve this is to either get rid of the major reasons why people are living their countries and migrating to other or to take dumping grounds, clean them up and turning them into a place where refugees can live and different nation, and countries help them by donating toys, money, and clothes thing necessary for a normal life style. This problem of the EU migrant crisis connects to a bigger enduring issue which will be the impact of migration throughout time because in this paper migration was caused and it affected the refugees and the countries where the refugees migrated to in a negative way but the countries tried to solve this problems in a positive way where both sides benefit from this and non get

Hurt. This also shows how different refugees have different background stories that motivates them to migrate to different places to seek for help, and safety, and this backgrounds stories also contribute to migration because most of this stories are bad and it makes them think that it's time for them to move on that they have to stand up and get out of this mess caused most of the times by their own people or their Own government.
