Yo David wait up man I turned around as Cameron jogged up

Categories: Running and jogging

"Yo David, wait up, man!" I turned around as Cameron jogged up beside me. "You comin' to Phineas's tonight?" he asked as we trudged down the school steps.

"Can't," I replied. "I've got to take some pics for photography class."

Cameron and Phineas were my two best friends. I had known them almost all my life, and we had stuck together throughout school. Cameron was good with machines; he wanted to be a car mechanic when he grew up. He had light brown hair and freckles, and always had a lot of energy.

Phineas, on the other hand, was the geek of the group. He loved computers and technology, and there wasn't a computer-related question he couldn't answer. He had short black hair and green eyes.

"Aww, that sucks," Cameron said. "Well, ask your uncle if you can come over tomorrow. Phineas got this sick new pc and we're gonna do some hardcore gaming."

"I'll see what I can do," I said.

"'Kay. See ya, David!" I waved as Cameron ran over to his mom's awaiting jeep.

I swung my skateboard out from under my arm and threw it beneath my feet. Pushing my sand-colored hair out of my blue eyes, I skated on the sidewalk into the southern side of Manhattan. Soon I was pushing open the door to my uncle's house.

"Hey, Uncle Andrew," I called.

"Yo, David! Sup, man?" A voice called from the kitchen. I walked over and plopped my bag down on the dining room table.

My uncle was a very laid-back, casual man. He liked to just go with the flow, as he would call it. He never got angry or overexcited; he always had the same casual, bored kind of emotion. Ever since he had adopted me, I hadn't seen him any other way. But I liked him. He was like a mentor to me. He was chill, laid-back. A nice break from the rush of middle school.

"Good day at school?" Uncle Andrew asked, strolling into the room with a can of Pepsi in his hand.

"Yeah," I replied as he sat down next to me.

"How's that photography class of yours goin'?"

"It's pretty cool. Mr. Finch wants us to bring in some landscape photos on Friday. I thought I'd head out of town to take some pics of the sunset."

"Sounds fresh," Uncle Andrew replied, kicking his feet up on the coffee table. We sat in silence for a while, then he spoke again.

"You know," he said, his voice becoming more serious. "You're pretty lucky to be able to attend that fancy school of yours. You should be thankful that your parents left you that money."

"Yeah," I said wistfully. "Sometimes I wish I could remember them. I mean, I know how they look. But I just wish I could remember what they were like. Their personality."

"Well," said Uncle Andrew, a grin playing at his lips, "Your dad was pretty mischievous. When we were kids, he'd get himself in all kinds of trouble. And although he grew out of that habit, he still had that twinkle in his eye, like he knew something that nobody else did.

"Your mom was adventurous; she loved to explore and find new places. She would take your pop on all kinds of trips and vacations."

He reached over and ruffled my hair, grinning. "And now, look at what they left behind. A cunning, devilish young man that gets himself in all kinds of trouble, and yet somehow manages to keep his grades up."

I grinned, shoving him off. We both chuckled, and Uncle Andrew got up. "You better get that photography assignment done. Be back before nine."

Later, I was riding my bike out of town down a dirt side-road. This was all farmland out here, and the sun was just beginning to set. I hoped to get a good picture before it became completely dark.

Tightening the strap that held my camera bag, I plunged off the road and into the expanse of fields. I biked for a while, wheat stalks slapping me as I sped by. I wanted to get to the top of this hill; I would get a good view from there.

But when I reached the top of the hill, I saw something completely unexpected. Below me, a tall electric fence surrounded a large building. A few large trucks lined one side and a helicopter stood on a helipad. People in black patrolled the outside, and two or three spotlights pierced the darkness, sweeping the fields of grass.

I could see that the building was positioned on the other side of this hill so that it was impossible to see it from the road. It had no windows, and it had a single set of double doors flanked by four security guards.

Suddenly I got the feeling that being here was a bad idea. I was just turning to bike back down the hill when my foot suddenly slipped on a loose patch of dirt.

Down I fell, tumbling down the slope, landing at the bottom in a pile of dust. Night had fallen by now, and darkness blanketed the field. I began to sit up, then ducked down again as a light swept over me. My thoughts raced. This place didn't look good. If I got caught by one of those men, it could mean big trouble.

"Who's there?" a voice shouted from the distance, making my heart leap. I looked around frantically for an escape. My eyes fell on a metal manhole in the ground. A ladder led down into it. I made a split-second decision, then began to crawl towards it.

It seemed that it was electrical access that had been accidentally left open. It was dark inside, with a single lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. I reached up and clicked it. It flickered on, illuminating an open toolbox on the floor, and a control panel hanging open on my right. A narrow hall led forward and towards the building.

I slowly crept down it. I had to find another exit and get the heck out of this place. The hall went on for a couple hundred feet, then abruptly ended. A wire grate let in a little bit of light above me. I took a deep breath, then pushed it open and climbed up.

I was in a kind of janitor's closet. Brooms, tools, and shelves lined the small space. A wooden door stood on one side, light shining from beneath it.

I tiptoed over and looked through the keyhole. I saw an empty white hall, with fluorescent lights lining the ceiling. Turning the door handle, I stepped out into the hall and looked around. One or two doors lead out of the hall, and the one I had just left read ELECTRICAL ACCESS.

I slowly began to make my way down the hall towards the other end. There had to be another exit.

All of a sudden, I heard a voice behind me. I panicked and dove into one of the doors and shut it behind me. The person passed by, and I could hear their muffled voice through the door.

"... during the presentation tomorrow. And Subject 18 needs a briefing on..." The voice faded into the distance.

I breathed hard, my heart pounding. That had been too close. I needed to find a way out fast.

After a few minutes, I calmed down and began to examine the room around me. It seemed to be a sort of lab; there was a bench covered with test tubes and blueprints, a chalkboard covered in formulas and diagrams, and a few computers lining the wall.

Oh, and I forgot to mention the motionless body on a table.

I gasped and stumbled backward. I started to fumble with the door handle but then hesitated. After a couple of minutes, curiosity got the best of me. I turned and crept toward the table.

The table held a woman clad in bright red and yellow clothing, almost like a Halloween costume. She had flaming red hair and sharp features. Her chest rose and fell with slow breathing, and a few tubes were connected to veins on her arms. She didn't appear to be injured; on the contrary, her skin almost seemed to glow with a vibrant luminescence. A label on the table read Subject 9.

I left the room and made my way down the hall once more. This time, I made it to a door leading back out into the fields. From there, I ran as fast as I could back to my bike. Before I rode away, I turned around and snapped a picture before beating it back to Manhattan.

"How was photography?" asked Uncle Andrew as I walked into the house twenty
