Why women don’t exercise?

Categories: ExerciseWomen

There has been evidence given that single women spend more time performing physical activity than married women (Brown P. R. et al 2005 p. 131). This is what prompted this research whose objective was to obtain some qualitative reasons that the women give for not engaging in physical exercise. I is also aimed at determining if there are any differences between the reasons given by single and married women for not engaging in physical activity. As (Waehner P. n. d. ), points out there are many reasons why women generally do not exercise.

She lists them down as being exercise hurts, there is no time, they do not know how to do it, a lot of family obligations, there are no visible physical changes in their bodies, it is too expensive for them to join a gym, some just hate exercising while others have tried it but are unable to maintain the routine and/or end up quitting while others simply have no motivation to exercise either from others and also from themselves.

The University of Tennessee goes a step further to include the lack of access to exercising facilities and also the rate of crime reduces the safety of the environment.

These reasons combined with the lack of time dedicated to the exercising practice. On top of these reasons, Chhoda Nitin gives some other reasons namely having a very busy schedule, assumption that if you stop exercising all the benefits gained will be lost, some are worried because they have heart conditions and think it will be worsened by the strain while others involve themselves in games weekly for recreation and assume that it enough exercise (2006).

He however notes that all these reasons are very lame excuses that can be solved.

Married women are more likely to have excuses of time because they combine work and family while single women cite the excuse of lack of motivation. 1 (b) Research Methods To conduct this research, there is use of the interview method of gathering information. This involves selection of respondents to form a sample that is representative of the population through such methods as snowballing. There is the formulating of the questions either by questionnaire or just having key questions to be asked. The respondents can be interviewed one by one or in a focus group setting.

The respondents are allowed to speak freely on the topic of discussion and their views are recorded either by tape recording, taking notes during interview or any other appropriate method. The information gotten is then analyzed and coded. They are classified according to age, marital status and coded in axial, reflexive and open coding. Reasons for not exercising The women interviewed gave a variety of reasons why they do not exercise. Surprisingly, none of them said they have any form of regular exercise all responded to exercise irregularly. The most common reasons given were lack of time, money, motivation, knowledge and money.

One single lady of 18 years said she had a heart mummer, which caused her to avoid exercising, as it would strain her heart. There were other reasons mentioned which include the distance one has to travel to a gym, knowledge about various exercises and how to use gym equipment and also ways of socializing. Others like Shree do not get any fun from doing exercise. Despite having the same reasons given, some were mostly by married women and others by single women. Some like time were given by both categories but the causes of lack of time were different between the married and the single women.

For the young they give the reasons of spending their time socializing with friends in clubs and pubs dancing or with their friends. For others like Bree who is twenty years old. Her time is used searching for a job and hence one cannot afford to spare time for exercising. When it comes to married women or those with children to support even if they are single, they lack time because of long working hours during the day and getting involved in family work when they get home. Maree who is thirty-nine and married adds that she feels guilty if she does not spend her time with her children.
