With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa provides the graphic accounts of battlefields at Peleliu and Okinawa during WW2. It directly comes from the memories of a front-line soldier. It is based on the personal memoirs of Sledge. In order to avoid the false accounts, he uses the survived notes that he used to keep in the pocket sized Bible during the World War II. He has further collected the first-hand accounts from other soldiers who participated in the same battles.
Although most of the memoirs are reserved for combat accounts but writers has provided an insight into the psychological recesses of soldiers during the most exhausting and appalling moments of warfare. He has further described their emotional pathos and miseries. Everyone is aware of the triumphs of American Marines in the pacific battles of Peleliu and Okinawa but Sledge has tried to depict the heavy toll that American Marines received during the fights and the emotional psychological agonies that the remaining member of the Marine were afflicted with.
Sledge’s account is marked with minute details and clarity of expression. He describes that how war brutalizes and dehumanizes a human being despite the military restraint codes. In this regards, he present the story of a Japanese soldier having disjoint the penis of an American Marine and putting it into his mouth. His account is not litered with prejudice or ill-will toward anyone but he presents the battlefield accounts with historical objectivity.
He also manifests the brutalities of American soldiers as well.
His illustrations and depiction of the subject produce a feeling of empathy toward the soldiers, whether American or Japanese. As a whole, it presents the finest first hand accounts of American Marine battles in the Pacific.
