Why This Class Is for Us

The first article that I read was “Looking is Not Seeing and Listening is Not Hearing: A Replication Study with Accelerated Bachelor of Science of Nursing or BSN students.” (HONAN, 2008) This article observed BSN students and studied their observation and listening skills before the students received training in art and music and then the students were observed after they received training. The objective of this study was to determine if by studying art this task could/would improve the nurse’s observation and listening skills.

The second article that I read was “Training the Clinical Eye and Mind: Using the Arts to Develop Medical Students’ Observational and Pattern Recognition Skills” (Shapiro, 2006). This article focused on understanding the similarities and differences between art-based teaching and clinical teaching styles for communication, observation and pattern recognition skills of 3rd year medical students. The medical students were divided into 3 groups. The first group of students was trained with clinical photos and cases. The second group of students were trained using art and the third group was trained using a combination of art and dance.

The second and third group were eventually merged.

The results of this study it showed that there are multiple similarities between art and medicine such as: learning how to read gestures and expressions, how to interpret context, how to perceive emotion dimensions and narrative. The study determined that two styles of teaching complement each other, thus strengthening the student’s observation and hearing skills.

Each of the two articles have similarities and some differences.

The differences are the first article used Bachelor of Science Nursing Students as test subjects, while the second article used medical students as the test subjects. Another difference is the medical students received training with art and music, while the nursing students had both medical cases for

Both articles used students and not actual doctors and nurses to study. These were used because the practicing doctors and nurses have established his or her own style of observing. By using students who are learning, it is easier to obtain if the training is working. Another similarity of the two articles are the results of both observations determined that using the arts (music, photographs, dance and pictures) improved the student’s assessment skills.

From taking this class I hope to gain obtain more knowledge about art. I hope to broaden and deepen my love and appreciation for art. I would like to be able to see a painting and be able to interpret the painting or sculpture. Art is very interesting and complex but can be beautiful. Before reading the three articles I never knew or thought about how art could influence or help you to develop your observation and hearing skills. From taking this class I hope to develop my observation skills, by developing my observation skills; this will make me a better nurse to my patients and allow me to hear them and be an advocate for them if needed.
