Why should social media be taught about in schools?

We live in a generation where kids as young as 9 are having phones and social media. We live in a generation where speaking to strangers online and having 100 + friends who we barely know makes you popular. We live in a generation where we are so dependant on technology that it is as addictive as a drug. Fellow students, let me ask you all this question, Would you like to see our children acting like this ? Would you like seeing you son or daughter in potential danger online? In order to prevent this, I believe that the correct and safe way of using Social media must be taught in schools.

Social Networking can be very beneficial to keep in touch with Friends and to communicate with Family and people from across the world. It has become very popular particularly amongst teenagers. However, It must be compulsory for children to learn about the consequences as it is a potential damaging thing. It can lead to a variety of issues including mental illness.

Some people state that if kids are old enough to have a phone and a social media account they should be able to responsibly use the internet. Wrong. According to the National Alliance on Mental illness, People between the ages of 15-24 suicide is the third leading cause of death due to cyberbullying.

69% of People who commit suicide have been diagnosed with mental illness due to cyberbullying. In addition 95% of all teenagers have used the internet and a whopping 80% of them are social media users according to Pew Research Internet Project.

From these statistics we can clearly see how easy it is to become victims. Do we not owe it to the 69% of youth who sadly ended there life's because of the online world. Do we not as a world want to protect are children? This is why it is so crucial for our education systems to bring in the safe Que and consequences of Social media as part of the curriculum.

Instead of continuing our ways, we can change. As a nation and together as a world. We can potentially stop cyberbullying and other problems just by educating children in school about the forest ways to use social media. Think of all the lives we could have saved!

We can change our generation, We can be the generation to make an impact on this world. We are the ones who will be shaping the future so it is our responsibility to now make the change. We say we live in a "messed up society" but have you ever thought to yourself We are the society. We are the ones who will develop our future world, just by making a small decision such as teaching the correct and safe use of social media in schools, which will make a big impact on the rest of our lives.
