For a relatively young developing nation, we can be proud of Malaysia’s achievements. Part of our success is due to the fact that we have been granted God-given advantages in terms of fertile land and natural resources. Part of our success is due to our ability to adapt to changing circumstances by implementing pragmatic policies.

This has certainly been the case in our management of the economy. We took advantage of our low cost base to transform from being a commodity producer to becoming a manufacturing-driven economy. It is a strategy that has underpinned our growth and enabled us to prosper.

However, just as we moved away from our reliance on commodity prices, we must realise that supplying basic manufactured goods at low prices cannot sustain Malaysia’s competitiveness. It will not enable Malaysia to engineer its leap into the ranks of the developed world.

What is needed is greater emphasis on enhancing our technological capabilities and ability to innovate. We must harness our knowledge in science and technology and we must give full rein to our creativity.

It is essential that we extract more value from what we reap and we inject more value into what we produce. We must apply technology to design more efficient processes, to create better methods of production and to invent new and better products. Only by effectively channeling our intellectual capabilities, our ideas and our “software” can we hope to achieve our aspirations.
