Why Schools Shouldn't Ban Facebook during COVID

Facebook is a social networking service that allows users to connect with friends, coworkers, and strangers online by creating free profiles. Users can share photos, music, movies, and articles, as well as their own views and opinions, with as many people as they want. McCharty (2010), who defines Facebook as a significant educational environment owing to its popularity and easy use, performed a blending (virtual and real) learning environment. However, by the cause of negative issue, Facebook is banning students from creating an account.

In our state right now in the midst of pandemic, it become our daily habit to use the Facebook. Facebook helps students to interact with their classmates and teachers as academic purposes. It was reported by Madge et al. (2009), that educational Facebook use is more of sharing lesson materials over Facebook, planning common project studies and providing communication between teachers and students. Therefore, Facebook could allow for unique approaches to assignments. Through the Facebook platform, students can pass their homework assignments to their teachers without the need to go to school, especially right now that we are in online and blended- learning.

Although, there are negative issues around the Facebook that we cannot avoid and that can affect the students’ learning, still, it’s not fair to ban the students from creating an account because of those negative issues.
