Why Is Reading so Important

Reading is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols in order to construct or derive meaning (reading comprehension). It is a means of language acquisition, of communication, and of sharing information and ideas. Like all language, it is a complex interaction between the text and the reader which is shaped by the reader’s prior knowledge, experiences, attitude, and language community which is culturally and socially situated. The reading process requires continuous practice, development, and refinement.

Readers use a variety of reading strategies to assist with decoding (to translate symbols into sounds or visual representations of speech) and comprehension. Readers may use morpheme, semantics, syntax and context clues to identify the meaning of unknown words. Readers integrate the words they have read into their existing framework of knowledge or schema (schemata theory). Reading is the best thing that us human being can do for ourselves, because through reading we learn how to discover new ideas, vocabulary and concepts.

We also have to consider that reading a newspaper or book we develop our analytical thinking so the brain is working and getting new knowledge for the rest of our life. However, there is a fact that a person who likes to read will be successful but a person that does not like read will fail in life because that is what the educational system suggests. Society is forcing people to improve their life or better to say our life, because life is harder day by day, that is why is important for us to prepare ourselves and the only way is to create a good reading habit.

It is important to read because we share knowledge and opinions with each other; another consideration is that through reading we learn new words; reading can save us in order not to get lost. Reading is typically an individual activity, although on occasion a person will read out loud for the benefit of other listeners. Reading aloud for one’s own use, for better comprehension, is a form of intrapersonal communication. Reading to young children is a recommended way to instill language and expression, and to promote comprehension of text.

Before the reintroduction of separated text in the late middle Ages, the ability to read silently was considered rather remarkable. That is why Society is forcing people to improve their life or better to say our life. It is important to read because we share knowledge with each other, and that is something that usually happens day by day. We find a person or a friend and we start to talk about a book that we both have read before, it is a wonderful experience because we know what we are going to be able to share our different points of view about the same book.

Also, if we do not remember something, reading refreshes our mind at the time of chatting with others. Creating a good reading habit helps in our day to day activities such as studying, and having informal and formal conversations. “Reading is fundamental to function in today’s society. There are many adults who cannot read well enough to understand the instructions on a medicine bottle. Day-to-day activities that many people take for granted become a source of frustration, anger and fear. ” (www. concordiauniversityonline). his happen now a days that some people try to read but when they cannot do it they feel like destroy, but one of the solutions is to not stop and continues practicing. Whatever your reason for reading it is not very likely that you were interested in the grammatical structure used. You read because you wanted to get something from writing. We will call this the message it might have been facts, but could just as well have been enjoyment, ideas, and feelings. (pg. 3) Learning to read in a second language, especially in adulthood, may be a different process than learning to read a native language in childhood.

There are cases of very young children learning to read without having been taught. Such was the case with Truman Capote who reportedly taught himself to read and write at the age of five. There are also accounts of people who taught themselves to read by comparing street signs or Biblical passages to speech. The novelist Nicholas Delbanco taught himself to read at age six during a transatlantic crossing by studying a book about boats. Brain activity in young and older children can be used to predict future reading skill. Cross model mapping between the orthographic and phonologic areas in the brain are critical in reading.

Thus, the amount of activation in the left dorsal inferior frontal gyros while performing reading tasks can be used to predict later reading ability and advancement. Young children with higher phonological word characteristic processing have significantly better reading skills later on than older children who focus on whole-word orthographic representation. Reading is an intensive process in which the eye quickly moves to assimilate text. Very little is actually seen accurately. It is necessary to understand visual perception and eye movement in order to understand the reading process.

There are several types and methods of reading, with differing rates that can be attained for each, for different kinds of material and purposes: Subvocalized reading combines sight reading with internal sounding of the words as if spoken. Advocates of speed reading claim it can be a bad habit that slows reading and comprehension, but other studies indicate the reverse, particularly with difficult texts Speed reading is a collection of methods for increasing reading speed without an unacceptable reduction in comprehension or retention.

Methods include skimming or the chunking of words in a body of text to increase the rate of reading. It is closely connected to speed learning. Proofreading is a kind of reading for the purpose of detecting typographical errors. One can learn to do it rapidly, and professional proofreaders typically acquire the ability to do so at high rates, faster for some kinds of material than for others, while they may largely suspend comprehension while doing so, except when needed to select among several possible words that a suspected typographic error allows.

Rereading is reading a book more than once. “One cannot read a book: one can only reread it,” (Vladimir Nabokov), Because life is harder day by day, that is why is important for us to prepare ourselves,Another consideration is that through reading we learn new words because through vocabulary that we read or hear is that we create new forms of language. For example when the word “commandments” is mentioned, a person automatically relates it to the Bible and law. The same happens with any word related to feeling or ideas. “Reading is important because words – spoken and written – are the building blocks of life. What you become in the future will depend on the words you believe about yourself now. People, families, relationships, and even nations are built from words. ” On the other hand, vocabulary is the only one source of difficult in text, since you can translate it into extremely simple English and the message is not challenging intellectually.

For readers whose vocabulary is limited, this is more like the problem. (pg. 6). Reading is fundamental in developing a good self-image. Nonreaders or poor readers often have low opinions of themselves and their abilities. Many times they feel as if the world is against them. They feel isolated everybody else can read – which isn’t true and behavior problems can surface. They can perform poorly in other subjects because they cannot read and understand the material and so tend to “give up. ” Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows in its ability. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language skills.

It also helps them learn to listen. Everybody wants to talk, but few can really listen. Lack of listening skills can result in major misunderstandings which can lead to job loss, marriage breakup, and other disasters – small and great. Reading helps children and adults focus on what someone else is communicating. Create a good reading habit. The flow of ideas cannot be stopped. We need to read and research to build on the good ideas and expose the bad ideas before they bring destruction.

Only by reading can we be armed in this never-ending, life-and-death struggle.
