Why Is It Important to Advance Your Education after Graduating from High School

Some students start questioning the need for college education when they are about to finish high school. Other students see the opportunity to start earning immediately is more attractive compared to going to college to continue their education. A section of them may not to continue to college because the cost of college is prohibitive. Although there are lots of challenges and responsibilities that come along with finishing high school, it is important for each student to understand the benefits that come along with college education. The benefits are more job opportunities; find a career; and improve on communications skills.

More than just building a career, college is a wonderful time for most people. It is the place where freedom and imagination are allowed for walk hand in hand. It is a time when most people have their first real alcoholic drinking spree or when they first do whatever it is they were not allowed to do in high school. College is a time for getting to know other people and also a time for getting to know one’s self. Through all the experiences and moments that one has in college, there is one thing that these all have in common; they all form part of the journey of self-discovery that people experience in life.

With all the freedom and the liberal thinking that is encouraged, college students often find out who they really are and what they want to do when they are in college. There is no doubt that college is considered by everyone as one of the most influential phases of their lives. Without debunking modern psychological doctrine that childhood is the most formative time, it is presented that college is not about formation but rather about discovery and finding out what those formative years have indeed created and developed.

It is a time for coming to terms with one’s likes and dislikes. It is a time for discovering that niche where one belongs in this entire grand scheme of the world and reality; Finding out where one fits or if one does fit at all but more importantly it is a chance to connect through others through communication. Oftentimes, however, this whole journey of college is overwhelming. There are those who are not able to cope with the changes that they go through or those who cannot deal with the discoveries about themselves that they make in the process.

As such, the question that begs to be asked is whether or not college is good place to find out who you really are. Is college really the best place for all of this self-discovery given that this is also a crucial point in a person’s life from an academic or career perspective? It is argued, therefore, that college is a good place for self-discovery for some but this is not for everyone because self-discovery should be a process that takes an entire lifetime to unfold and cannot be compressed into four short years without damaging side effects.

Through this journey of personal development, a person not only improves skills that will be useful in the real world but also creates solid foundations for being a functional member of society. It has been said that the pursuit of one’s goals and dreams are journeys that oftentimes take a lifetime to accomplish. There are those who reach the end of their lives not accomplishing what they wanted to do because they were either too intimidated by the prospect of even embarking on such a quest or they did not have the right opportunities in life.

Much like those who are overwhelmed by the prospect of college, they are often too afraid to make the proper decisions that are beneficial to them because they are too daunted by their self-discovery. The problem here is that there comes a certain point in one’s life when one must make a firm decision, a commitment to something much more than one’s own personal goals. Oftentimes, this means sacrificing one for the other. While there are those, however, who are lucky enough to have their own personal goals and that pursuit for higher objectives converge, there are also a number who are not able to do so.

It must be remembered that the value of going to college has to do with the value of a good education. As the world continues to change and the workplace becomes more and more challenging and competitive, it becomes imperative for anyone looking for a successful career to not only have the drive to succeed but also the training and expertise to do so. It is simply not enough to be talented. Admittedly, there are those with innate talents who are able to handle certain things with relative ease as compared to others but still there are things that they do not know.

This is where the value of a good education comes in because it allows people to compensate for things that they are not good in and to improve upon talents that they already have. This means that college is not really focused with the psychological development or adjustment of a person but rather providing a person with the education to have a successful career in the future. Because of globalization, boundaries that separate countries in job market and business are almost becoming extinct. People are no longer afraid to search for opportunities outside their countries.

This will increase the job competition which has a significant impact on the job market. People from different countries, such as India, South America, China, have been able to travel to the US to compete for job opportunities. These individuals have skills, talents, ambitions and are also well educated. Because of this, it has become criteria for individuals to equip themselves with the necessary skills to be able to compete in the job market. Just a high school education is not competitive in today’s world.

Therefore, it is important for students to ensure that they have a plan to advance to next level, which is college, before finishing high school. The importance of this can also be gleaned from the importance of college. With today’s economic crisis, there are fewer and fewer jobs in the United States. Statistics have shown that of those who are currently employed, 80% of them have college degrees. This majority of employed individuals represent one of the best reasons to get a college education, which is that those who are well trained and educated will get the jobs.

As previously mentioned, when there is competition for scarce resources, those with the better qualifications will get the job. There are those who realize that that there have been so many opportunities in life that they have not been able to take advantage of because of the competitiveness of the working environment. They often realize too late that they should have completed their college education or even embarked on gaining one. Opening one’s self up to a complete self-discovery also means exposing one’s self to the dangers that are associated with this.

It is not argued that self-discovery is not important to a person but rather that self-discovery is process that takes time. This is not something that can be done overnight or done in the four years of college. It is instead recommended that the journey of self-discovery be made exactly that, a journey that spans an entire lifetime. This way, there is no need to jeopardize one’s career. The journey towards self-discovery can be made even more complete once one has secured a good and stable future with the help of a good college education because it helps one fit into society, develop communication skills and also build a good career.
