I remember being a child when the first Nintendo Gaming Console came out for sale to the public. Standing in line at our local K-Mart, my family consisting of my dad, mom, sister, and myself, we were consumed by the overwhelming excitement of finally getting one. We were the only household in the entire neighborhood to own one. Which meant my uncles and a few close neighbors would come over to play Super Mario. I was forced to sit by for hours simply watching them while awaiting my turn.
When I finally got a chance to save Princess Toadstool, the defenseless female I was unsuccessful and therefore considered a ‘noob” or a person who is inexperienced in a particular activity. I would stay up all night getting mad every time I died and had to start all over from the beginning. For hours I would repeat the same level until I finally achieved the goal of each level. At that time, I did not consider it to be harmful. I also never took into consideration that this could be the start something detrimental. In this paper, I’m going to discuss reasons why video games are harmful to kids of an impressionable age.
Children and even teenagers who spend too much time playing video games become socially isolated which causes them to neglect priorities and responsibilities. They spend less time on homework and other physical activities such as spending time with family and friends. Video- induced seizers is also common in children with past experiences with this condition. Additionally, another health issue associated with video games is the concern for weight gain. William D Russell and Mark Newton stated in the “Journal of Educational Technology & Society”) “One cause of the recent increase in childhood obesity increase is lack of free-time physical activity and concurrent increases in “screen time”, including television, computer use, and video game activity.
I was an adolescent who just wanted to have fun playing a video game that I could win it. Not only did I contribute many hours and all my attention towards my game. I also deprived myself of food and proper restroom breaks. Due to my incompetence, I would get mad, lose my temper, and throw my controller. My parents seemed to not pay any attention to my behavior, other than my mom telling me to not break it. Obviously, my parents like many others have ignored or simply don’t see the early warning signs and the negative effects video games have and or will inflict on their children.
Now, I watch my nephew play games where he is talking to other players while he is yelling for them to kill someone. When he gets mad, he has the same reaction to his controller that I had. When he has his games taken away as punishment, he can have a bad attitude towards other people and can be physically mean to his sister. This causes concern for me. Is the anger stemmed from too many hours on the game or the type of games he is playing? According to the American Psychological Association, “The link between violent video game exposure and aggressive behavior is one of the most studied and best established. Since the earlier meta-analyses, this link continues to be a reliable finding and shows good multi-method consistency across various representations of both violent video game exposure and aggressive behavior.” Children are becoming desensitized towards aggression which means that they are becoming immune to aggression and then mirroring that behavior themselves. They are being trained to kill people and then be rewarded for it. This is causing the young members of society to lose respect for human life.
Then, when I turn on the news, I hear about another shooting by some crazed person at a school. The ages of these shooters, sometimes, is the age group of violent video game players. In this paper, I’m going to discuss reasons why I believe video games are harmful to kids of an impressionable age.violent video games ( call of duty infantry warfare, and the division)
