Is your life really private? Is anyone tracking your activities? Or what about your smartphones or other smart devices that you use daily?
It all narrows down to one main question, is the Internet really safe in terms of privacy?
No, it isn’t. We share our personal data without even knowing it. For example, take everyone’s favourite search engine, Google. Your data and activities are tracked and stored. Even Whatsapp, Facebook and Instagram are not safe at all. These three social media platforms are under one company, Facebook.
They have access to all your data and since it’s free, you are the product. How are they making money out of it? By giving the data to advertisers, they create personalized advertisements on these platforms for us.
Criminals can steal your information including your credit card, email ID, and their passwords and so on. Is this how we want our lives to be?
We can tackle these situations by using the right applications or software.
For a secure search engine, Duckduckgo would be the right choice. It is a search engine that does not track you at all.
Mozilla Firefox is a browser that respects your privacy. It also has an add-on (extra functionalities given to browser can be added later on) called ‘privacy badger’ that disable trackers as you view the web. Since advertisements have the ability to track you using cookies there is another add-on called ‘uBlock Origin’ that blocks all advertisements as you browse the web.
Tor Browser is another browser whose policy is that “internet users should have private access to an uncensored web”.
Firefox Send is an application used for file sharing. It shares a file either by limiting the number of downloads or restricting the time with the help of a generated link. The files in this application work with end to end encryption.
Thunderbird is an email client made by Mozilla Foundation. It is very secure in terms of privacy. How to create a password.
Passwords can be tricky to make. Making a secure password is mandatory. The longer the password, the more secure it is. These strong passwords are required to improve computer security. This is called password policy. However, as we are human beings, to remember all these passwords is a difficult task. Hence, we need a password manager. Keepass is a password manager which is open source. Passwords are kept in one database and locked with a master key. The databases are secured with encrypted algorithms that are very safe.
All the above applications or software are free.
Fun fact: Windows 10 is not secure. Seriously, it’s not privacy-free. Microsoft collects your data which includes your contacts, interests, basically your identity. Cortana does the same as well. It collects data mainly on your search and microphone input. Since all of us have the habit of not clearly reading the Terms and Conditions, it states that your data can be shared. However, there is a tool called ‘W10Privacy’ that disables most of the trackers. Or another alternative is using another operating system called Debian. It is also free and open source.
To summarise, data privacy is when a third party takes data out of an individual or an organization and makes use of it in their own way.
