A family physician is a doctor who has received up to three years of specialty training. Because of their education, family physicians are uniquely qualified to assist as primary care providers. Physicians play a very major role in the healthcare field of the country, for example, roughly one in four of all office visits are made to family specialty.

Physicians specialize in caring for people rather than focusing on the care of one illness, family physicians are frequently those doctors that people look for their daily treatment, like temperatures and flus or respiratory infections, and health screenings. When needed, physicians offer referrals for circumstances that need the skills of another doctor. Today, family doctors offer more care for America’s population than any other medical specialty.

Family medicine, family practice, general practice, or primary care is the first call for patients with non-emergency medical problems.

According to the American Academy of Family Physician (AAFP), some will work in hospitals facilities such as nursing homes, in urgent home clinics, or even medical officer in the military, while others pursue additional training to specialize or to perform special procedures. Further training includes 1 to 2 years fellowships or certificates of added qualification (CAQ) to specialize in field such as sports medicine, sleep medicine, hospice, geriatrics and others. Family doctors work in private medical facilities. If they want, they can receive extra training to pursue specialties or continue to teach administrative careers in the medical field.

The American Osteopathic Board of Family Physicians require its diplomates to carry on certification and bare the process of recertification every 8 years.

The reason I chose this career is that by watching physicians at work, I can see how they deliver good and bad news or deal with patients. I will also grow and understand what medicine can and can't do. The typical job that will be done includes taking patient histories, performing or requesting diagnostic tests, making diagnoses, prescribing treatment, controlling vaccinations and performing follow-up examinations. Along with instructing patients in disease prevention and health maintenance. Additionally, other duties include arranging medical records, and clinical reports. Family doctors have also associated health professionals, such as nurses, physician assistants and medical assistants. Shadowing this career will not help provide me with the practice of medicine, it is just an opportunity to witness firsthand what a physician are getting into. Observing the doctors to patient interaction will benefit me. In the future, I hope to shadow multiple doctors over a certain period this will give me an opportunity to explore not only the different medical fields but also compare different setting and physician styles. This career will help me understand the realities and limitations of medicine, discover likes and dislikes, enhance motives, and improve my articulation of goals.
