What Exactly Happened in This Book

Categories: Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde

The book itself was published in 1886 but the book never clarified what the exact it took place, so I assume the book is set around the early 1800s. The book takes place in Soho, London where there were dark alleyways and the people there wore wool coats and everyone had unhappy personality. The time was during the Victorian Era where there were many servants and there were a big difference between the rich and poor. The setting is a lot different to our time and place, the setting in the book reminds me of New York where everyone is grumpy and just wants to get to their destination so in my opinion, the setting impacts the “Why We Fight” theme by having John Utterson fight to solve the murder cases of Mr.

Hyde.

John Utterson is a lawyer and friends with Dr. Jekyll, he is very curious when he sees changes in Dr. Jekyll’s behavior. He doesn’t change in the course of the story but he just wants to figure out the mystery between Dr.

He doesn’t change in the course of the story because he stays evil throughout the story. Mr. Hyde is fighting for peace with the law, he just want to be left alone but he isn’t because he is a murder.

The conflict is between Dr. Jekyll’s split personality, Mr. Hyde is the evil side and has killed two people while leaving Dr. Jekyll a suspect. When Mr. Hyde kills someone Dr. Jekyll is forced to live with this evil side. Another conflict is the fact that Dr. Jekyll has to cover up Mr. Hyde action against the authorities. The climax is when Utterson broke the door down to Jekyll’s lab to see Hydes body. After that Utterson knew something was wrong and he went home and read Lanyon’s letter explain Jekyll’s split personality.

The resolution is when the letter explaining Dr. Jekyll’s split personality and the plan to separate the two got out. Utterson read it and realized why Jekyll turned himself into Hyde. Utterson finally solved the mystery between Jekyll and Hyde. Dr. Jekyll finality set peace with his two personalities (sort of) and Mr. Hyde did get win the war he was fighting but at least Jekyll isn’t carrying a secret on his shoulders. Dr. Jekyll is fighting to figure out the mystery with his split personalities and separate them for good. This is similar to something I’m fighting for. I’m fighting to figure out my place in the arts. I’m fighting to find where I belong; do I belong in dance or theater? As to how Jekyll is also trying to find his place with his personality and finally take the weight of the world off his shoulders and silence Mr. Hyde for good.
