Over time, Canada geese have experienced a large increase in their population and there is no biological validation that the population will stop growing. Canada geese have expanded their geographical range and have invaded many different areas, and will continue to invade many more regions. Originally, the geese’s habitat was southern Canada, but in recent years, they have been capable of inhabiting many new areas like northern Canada, the United States, and other regions where the climate is warm. Since warm climate makes an area livable for the geese, climate change is becoming a larger issue.

But, the geese still remain a concern for Canada, since the majority of the geese population is located within southern Canada. “Those … that nest, raise their young and/or moult in the most heavily populated areas of southern Canada have increased rapidly” (“Frequently Asked Questions – Canada Geese”). Knowing this, it is evident that the geese will be a concern for southern Canada.

The causes of the rapid growth in population are the laws protecting the geese and human effects on the landscape and temperature. Long ago, the Canada geese population was concerningly low, and the geese became protected by organizations like the Migratory Bird Convention Act, which is a Canadian act that did not allow people to hunt and capture Canada geese. Up to the present time, the geese were able to recover and increase their population, and organizations who protect the geese population still remain. To further increase the growth in population, the geese use human resources to live safely and breed. For example, many parks and safe wide areas have already and continue to open, and Canada geese will live and continue to develop their population there. Not only do the human changes to landscapes create habitats for the geese, they create warmer temperatures through climate change. As people continue to burn more fossil fuels by building and using vast amounts of energy to make adjustments to landscapes, greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere thus heats up the Earth and increases the temperature. Typically, the geese would migrate to breed in the south of the United States and Mexico, but with the warm temperatures, the geese are also able to live and breed in the majority of Canada, and the United States.

Unfortunately, Canada geese have caused a lot of damage to humans and the environment. According to various news articles written by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Canada geese are dangerous as they have and continue to harm people and the environment. Since the geese breed and live where there are many people, there are conflicts between humans and the birds. An abundant amount of accidents have happened, such as geese attacking humans in the city, and geese killed by airplanes. A resident in Ottawa was on a bike ride and was suddenly and severely attacked by a goose (Gollom), and nearly 70,000 birds including geese were killed by an airplane (“Nearly 7,000 birds killed in New York…”). Not only are the geese harmful to humans, but they are harmful to the environment. The geese wear down wetlands in large flocks, damage crops, and worsen the quality of water with their excrements. “Just 50 geese can produce two and a half tons of excrement in a year” (National Geographic). It is evident that Canada geese have caused many issues and will continue to cause even more. Consequently, humans have to spend a tremendous amount of money to fix the catastrophe.
