When the media first arose, the media were only used to provide communication and information. But, development of technology and life conditions affected the media. Today, media have a new concept including different purposes like entertainment advertisement. This newness contributed the effects of the media on people. Today, in every house parents and children use TV, newspaper, PC, radio, so, the most important factor affecting people is the media. The media certainly direct people’s thoughts and attitudes.
Moreover, the media do it in different ways. Every visual effect and article that people reach on computer or TV settles in people’s mind to give direction their behaviours at future times. Because of this reason, media have a main role causing people tend to having bad habits. The media do it by displaying nasty habits like etic things. Instead of show people nasty habits’ harms, the media encourage people, mostly teenagers. For example, BMS which is a TV series in USA is about university students who use alcohol and drugs all the time.
People who watch it disregard these nasty habits when their friends or relatives have these habits. This leads to an increase in having bad habits among people. Furthermore, because of the media, people may imagine themselves like TV heroes. For example, in 2001 a child who imagines herself Pikachu which is one of the most famous cartoon heroes jumped down from sixth floor. In addition, in Turkey, most people copy Polat Alemdar who is well-known TV character. People who watch this character started to buy weapons and violence, after this character.
Secondly, the media have impacts also mentally on society. People may limit their way of thinking by their views on TV. Firstly, programs in which famous people or authorities share their ideas about recent topic may direct what audience think about the topic. To illustrate, in 2003 there was a war between USA and Iraq. Before the war, some authorities talked on TV and said that Iraq cannot develop and the people of Iraq suffer it because of the Iraq’s government.
During the war many Iraqi supported USA, because they were hopeful for new Iraq which will come after the war. At 18 December 2011, USA forces withdrew from Iraq. Today Iraq’s situation is worse than before and people are regretful. As a second mental effect of the media among people, speeches and publications of politicians give a new dimension to people’s political thoughts. For example, political parties commit some proceeding before elections and try to convince people via the media. As another example, Turkish leader Deniz Baykal took place in a scandal on the media.
After this scandal related to the speeches in the media, there was not any other option without retiring for Deniz Baykal. The effects of the media can also observe on the production industry. Every new advertisement, TV serial and film brings new trends. To illustrate, after cartoons widely take place on TV, some firms started to produce the models of cartoon characters and use these characters to advertise. Moreover, after the famous TV series and films, some firms start to produce same of accessories and equipment that was used in these productions.
To illustrate, famous film trilogy The Lord of the Rings’ character Arwen’s necklace was produced and it was outsell by people event males. Obviously, the media have a great power, “Advertisements”. When one brand prepares an impressive advertisement and allows people to watch it, they will become popular; as a result of this their sales will increase. For instance, UFO, which is a heater brand, is a famous universal brand now thanks to their impressive advertisement. Furthermore, it can be observed that the media encourage people to having luxurious living.
For example, in Ask-I Memnu, which is a very famous TV serial in Turkey, all the characters live in by the sea houses and drive expensive sport cars; so, it makes people enthusiastic to this life style. In conclusion, the media has important effects on people. Due to fact that, the results and experts say that it direct people’s behaviours, life styles and world marketing. It is can be either of most useful element and most massive weapon. Obviously, the most important factor affecting people is the media. It can be easily predicted that the media will be the most effective element on people to end of life.
