Water Pollution Tolerance

Each was assigned a number: the number indicated the type or, macroinvertebrates and water that needed to be identified.

Each group had a sheet of all benthic macroinvertebrates, and we had to identify it by looking at the picture. Although, some organism looked very similar and it was hard to distinguish. We had to write down the name and the type of water pollution tolerance.

Next, after looking for the identification of the macroinvertebrate, each group was assigned with an unknown water sample and had to test for all water chemistry parameters; pH (low and high), ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, and dissolved solutes.

One of us went to the collect 30mL water from the unknown sample. I used the pipette to get 2 mL of water and put it on the pediatric dish, then take the dish under a microscope to observe for any unusual particles. The rest of the group worked on testing the chemicals. Each solution had its own directions and the number of drops.

For the high and low range pH test, you will need a test tube of 5 ml water, a pH test solution, and a color chart. The low range pH test tube will be added 3 drops of the solution, and for the high pH range test tube will be added 5 drops of solution. After adding the solution, the color chart will be used to identify the pH range.

Next, for the Ammonia test, there are two solution bottles for Ammonia, the first solution was used to add 8 drops to the test tube same for the second solution.

After adding the solution, the test tube is capped and then shaken vigorously for 5 seconds, and have to wait for 5 minutes for the color to develop and compare it to the Ammonia color chart.

At the same time, 10 drops of Nitrite solution is added into the test tube. Cap the test tube and shake for 5 seconds, then we had to wait for 5 minutes for the color to develop. After the color is developed, we compared it to the Nitrite color chart.

Similarly, the Nitrate test has two solutions: Nitrate Test Solution #1 (first solution) and Nitrate Test Solution #2 (second solution). For the first solution, 10 drops will be added into the test tube, then cap the test tube and invert tube several times to mix solution. The second solution, the bottle solution was vigorously shaken for 30 seconds. After being shaken, 10 drops are being added into the test tube, then it was cap the test tube and shaken vigorously for 1 min. Later on, we had to wait for 5 minutes so the color to develop.

Finally, to test for the phosphate, a sample pipette was used to get some of our water and the water was released on the test plate. Then, 3 drops of Phosphate Reagent was added on the test plate, and then we had to wait for 30 seconds to observe for any color develop.

Lastly, TDS water quality was used to measure the dissolved solutes in our sample.
