It was a period of hypocrisis: great progess and great poverty.

It derives from the differences between the status of the society: rich people living in wealthy mansion and poor people living in rotten boroughs, most of them were exploited in the factories and they died of pneumonia.There was a strict code,the victoria moral code, that was followed by all the stata of the society. There was a strong unhappiness and frustation and most people get drunk to escape from the reality. The most important things were only work and church and puritanism was very diffused ( no pleasure, no sex, no enjoyment ).

The moral purpose in literature, the Bilden Roman consisted in the doctrine of predestination. The most important authors in this period were Charles Dickens who was for the status quo and Oscar Wilde who was against the victorian standards. In the Victorian Age the economical growth of middle classes allowed the birth of a new philosophy, known as the victorian compromise. The aim was to save the morality in a material society who lacked of values. New words were : public virtues and private vices, that is the base of Victorian compromise. The woman was forced into unnatural marital roles and considered as a symbol of family values.
