To have a better understanding about the purpose of this report; it’s important to keep in mind and to know that these days ethical issues and corporate social responsibility are of the most important areas, and issues that arise in different companies. Construction companies should be extra careful with their Health and Safety since in the type of companies, there are many potential risk that could harm or put in danger many people.

Another important issue and topic that they will be advised in is in their Corporate Social Responsibility and their commitment to it. First it is important to know what Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), and why is it important for companies to follow CSR strategies, and the benefits that a company that follows CSR could have; but all of this information will discussed later on the, in the report in section specified to CSR. For now the most important thing to know is the companies vision towards CSR. As it states in the website, they are a company committed to CSR, which to start is a positive thing, and they state that one of their distinguished characteristics is the commitment they have towards society. Not only they are committed to CSR; as well they pay good attention in the quality and the environment, and as well to innovation. As the website Ferrovial states they “provide services to large communities to promote socio-economics development, help improve people’s living standards and contribute to their development” (Ferrovial, 2018). Their strategy is based in four main pillars which are profitable growth, internationalization, operational excellence and innovation, and Ferrovial’s financial discipline.

To have a better understanding and knowledge of the company there are some important facts, that should be known. Ferrovial is a big Spanish company dedicated in the construction industry and has more the 95 thousand employees, as well they are present in in 6 main markets, which include Spain, Australia, United Kingdom, Poland, the United States, and Canada. They have five main offices, all located in Madrid Spain. When consulted in December 17th, 2018 the price of one shar in Ferrovial is in €18.05, and during this year the share price has varied, the minimum being in €17.95 and the maximum in €18.16. Their current market capitalization is in 13.513 €M.

The primarily ethical issue that will be discussed through this report is the part related to Health and Safety, and the importance of having an appropriate and good strategy regarding Health and Safety, before, during and after each project. It should not only protect the companies employees, but also in the after part how it should protect the consumers, the people that will sometime use the project built by the company Ferrovial.

It is important to know what is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). According to Thorne McAlister and Ferrell they describe Corporate Social Responsibility as the “adoption of a business strategy focused to fulfill the economics, legal, ethics, and philanthropic responsibilities expected of it by its stakeholders” (Thorne McAlister, et al., 2005). Including CSR, a business should follow certain terms and management strategies in able to stay in the safe side, and be able to guide a company throughout certain definitions, to be ethical. There is no doubt that one of the major goals of businesses is to create profit, but businesses don’t always stay in the ethical side to be able to reach to the maximum profit a business could get. Probably some companies apply CSR as a business strategy, for others to have a positive vision of any given company, and not have a negative impression of not applying CSR as a business strategy. Part of the implications of CSR is that businesses are required to “pay taxes, abide by laws and regulations, treat employees fairly, follow through on contracts, protect the natural environment, meet warranty obligations, and adhere to many other standards” (Thorne McAlister, et al., 2005). Generally companies that meet or do more than expect regarding these standards, can be rewarded with the following “costumer satisfaction, employee dedication, investor loyalty, strong relationships in the community, and time and energy to continue focusing on business-related concerns” (Thorne McAlister, et al., 2005). In order to for your company to be considered as adopting and implementing CSR strategy the four responsibilities, as it can be quite challenging to reach and achieve, when done, it can open many doors for a business.

Implementing CSR as strategy can have many benefits, but as well it brings out more costs, but in the long term it’s more beneficial that costs it brings out. The most important and standing out benefits that this strategy implementation brings out can be an increase efficiency in “daily operations, more employee commitment, higher product quality, improved decision making, increased customer loyalty, and an improve in financial performance” (Thorne McAlister, et al., 2005). Coming more into specifications about the benefits of implementation of CSR, doing more research other benefits can be that it helps with the improvement in public image, it helps to increase the coverage of media, and also it helps to attract and retain future or current investors. In order to reach to a positive the maximum possible of organizational performance, it is important for costumers and employees to be able to trust the corporation at its maximum, and as well costumers should have satisfaction towards the company, employees should be very well committed and there should be a high loyalty in the investors of the company; and all of this four important key points make up social responsibility. As CSR can be bring many benefits, it is also a high cost strategy to apply, so although in the short term the costs of implementing CSR can be high, in the long run the benefits are more pleasing than the costs paid at the beginning.

The major people that are involved that CSR becomes a strategy implied by corporations are Stakeholders, it is important to know the difference between shareholders and stakeholders, that shareholders are always stakeholders, but not the other way around. Stake have always the best interest in the company, while shareholders only owns a stock in a public company. When talking about CSR, the stakeholders are the ones with the most interest that it is implemented as a strategy to bring the best out of the company.

When talking about values, also the values involved in Ferrovial, in their website they clearly state the values and visions. As stated in their website the vision, focuses on three main important questions being : “why? Shaping the future through the development and operation of sustainable infrastructure and cities. How? Committing to the highest level of safety, operational excellence and innovation. And What? Creating value for society and for our customers, investor and employees” (Ferrovial, n.d.). The most important values for the company, also stated in their website are focused in five important aspects which are: collaboration, which includes team work; innovation which includes progress; excellence that is efficiency and giving the best of the employees in order to be successful; respect tu employees costumers, and everyone involved either way in the company; and the last value; integrity which is acting with ethics at all times.

The vision statement as word of the Chairman of Ferrovial, Rafael del Pino, is: “Ferrovial has distinguished itself, above all, for its excellent professionals. Hard work and creativity centered on performance, have allowed us to overcome complex challenges and to take advantage of opportunities, transforming individual skills into collective success.
