Uniforms in Public Schools

Traditionally, any school is encouraged to implement school uniforms and dress codes. However, debates are rising regarding the issue of having school uniforms in public schools. A lot of academic institutes have school uniforms and dress codes for their students, but questions have been rising if having them in public schools are also justifiable. One would be able to understand if private schools have uniforms because it seems to regard them different from those students who study in public school. But in the community today, barriers between the elite and those who can get by are being discouraged.

The generation today is trying to build one culture and one globe. People should not be categorized based on economic statuses, or any label for that matter. However, as far as public schools are concerned, is it really appropriate to have school uniforms and dress codes implemented in their academic systems? Does it raise the level of these schools to a degree that no longer distinguishes them from the elite? Or does it only serve as a mask to veil the truth about public school students? Is there really a difference in a person depending on what kind of school they are attending?

Does the educational upbringing of the student change his entire personality? Does the amount of money put into the education define how smart a student could get? The questions can be countless even though the issue involved is only concerned about dress codes. However, one should think that even dress codes also play a role on how students perceive education. It also greatly influences how students receive education. Public schools are trying to match the more elite category based on the quality of education their students are receiving. Many of them also implemented dress codes and school uniforms. However, did it serve their purpose well?

Were they able to achieve a high level of education by having school uniforms? There are also those who are vehemently against using school uniforms, especially on the part of the students. They have argued and refused to use school uniforms, saying that it does not help them in completing their education. They have been labeled as juvenile delinquents and deviants, but one should ask if they were really evading from the norms, or were they battling for what they believe should be right. There Should be Uniforms in Public Schools Public schools should implement the use of school uniforms and have justifiable dress codes.

There are firm reasons behind this claim. The first of which is that school uniforms are relatively cheaper. The second reason is that having school uniforms also reduce peer pressure. More importantly, school uniforms also relatively increase school pride. School uniforms are relatively cheaper. Historical Boy’s Clothing mentioned that when students use school uniforms they do not have to buy designer clothes to wear during the school year. Designer clothes also get over washed and might be out of fashion within a short period of time. This will make students replenish their closets with new wardrobes almost every season.

However, school uniforms have been recognized to be more economically friendly. They are cheap and changing them when they do fade would not be as expensive as changing designer clothes. Furthermore, most school uniforms are also, as stated in the aforementioned website, is designed to endure many washings so that it can be used almost everyday. This mostly concerns the parents who are usually in charge of the laundry. In other words, they are able to get more quality than they paid for. With regards to designer clothes, although they are made of sturdy material, the amount paid for mainly goes to the design than the quality of the material.

The second reason is that school uniforms will also reduce peer pressure. This is an inevitable problem in any school, and the only answer administrators found was to implement discipline. Having school uniforms is part of that disciplinary process of reforming students. When students learn how to be obedient, they are also able to know that there are rules and regulations that would do more good than harm. In this light, when students become disciplined individuals, the occurrence of violent behaviors and untoward incidents within the classrooms and corridors are lessened.

With regards to school uniforms, violent behavior happens against those who cannot keep up with the latest fashion trends. It was mentioned in the earlier website that students get questioned by other students for their reasons of not being able to cope with the latest trends. They get teased and bullied about the simplest changes in these trends. Moreover, sources say there are less fortunate students who could be very sensitive about what they where. This could also lead to violent behavior or retaliation.

This kind of behavior regarding clothing is not only a shallow reason for students to argue about, but it also distracts the students from their main purpose which is to get a good education in school. To have students argue about the simple fashion trends does not teach students to be well rounded. True, the faculty and staff may be the most intellectual set of people chosen to teach these students. But if the students are distracted by the incidents in school, on top of what they have to deal within their own homes, they might not be able to reach the objective of completing their education.

Lastly, school uniforms should be implemented in public schools because it can increase both the school and the students’ pride. This is because a student is able to attain a certain sense of belongingness. When students wear a print or design that is exclusive to that school, then the student will feel that despite being ridiculed by judgmental eyes he belongs to a certain group of people. Pride can sprout from these especially when the academic institution is able to have good students and excellent graduates. Furthermore, school uniforms are considered banners, as much as one school anthem become their battle cry.

It unifies every student into one body. The failure of one is the failure of all. But it also means that the success of one is also everyone’s success. They are bound by that one name and it can inspire a student to reach that collective goal or even go beyond everyone else’s expectations. In summary, school uniforms should be implemented in public schools because it brings benefits that will promote a well rounded education for students. In addition, school uniforms are relatively cheaper than designer clothes. It is also more durable because it was designed to endure washings for daily use.

Having school uniforms will also reduce peer pressure and violent behavior. Students are not forced to always keep up with the latest trends, which can be very costly. They will not be teased simply because they do not wear the latest designs because each student will be wearing the same thing. Furthermore, wearing uniforms can also become part of a disciplinary action. Lastly, it is most important that students wear school uniforms because it can bring forth a sense of pride and belongingness. Their uniforms will stand as their banner as it represents a good section of the achievements of the entire student body.

Furthermore, it can be a form of inspiration for any student who will carry the name of the school, as they also carry these achievements that labeled them as a success. There Should Not be Uniforms in Public Schools When the academe insists that school uniforms be implemented even in public school, it is probable that they missed certain points that made wearing uniforms in public academic institutions an idea that should be discouraged. However, there are more than sound reasons for pubic schools to abolish the use of school uniforms or to even consider these dress codes. The first of the these reasons is that it has a way of limiting the students’ freedom of self expression. Second, it can be very uncomfortable for a student to wear school uniforms in pursuit of completing their education. More importantly, to counter what the affirmative has argued, school uniforms do not decrease violent behavior or increase academic achievement. It has to be re-established that there are no relations on how school uniforms can change the behavior of a student.

Moreover, school uniforms limit a student’s right of self expression. When one is repressed, there can only be two possible reactions. The first is for students to obey with a broken spirit. That person may feel that that expressing one’s self is wrong. Students may get the idea that expressing themselves through clothing is an inappropriate way of presenting himself. It could be wrong to let their feelings show through what they wear. The other reaction could be rebellion. It could be that students cannot tolerate repression.

The more they are repressed, the greater chances that they would fight back since there are individuals who are aggressive by nature. They are those who will speak up when they know that the authorities have crossed the line between discipline and abuse. They simply cannot accept the policies. They should be able to attain their education without any form of hindrances from school administrators. Furthermore, academic institutions will fail in teaching their pupils if these students are prohibited from freely expressing themselves. The students are unable to receive the education they deserve.

When students are unable to express themselves through the things they wear, expressing themselves through other avenues may be hindered as well. The idea is not which media they should express themselves, but by how much they could do so. This argument also gave light to another issue, which also contends that school uniforms should not be included in school policies because it can be very uncomfortable. This factor may hinder a student from learning anything. As the earlier source mentioned, what one wears has little or no connection to how students deal with his academics.

What a student wears does not make him any brighter nor dull. It is just a means for one person to fell most comfortable when receiving his education. There are a lot of student who do not really feel right when wearing uniforms. Some girls are not at ease when wearing skirts while some boys are not comfortable wearing coats and ties. This can bring a litany of complaints. However, students can also be reminded that the time they spend complaining can be put into doing their homeworks and participating well in their in-class activities.

Unfortunately, no matter how much administrators and faculty would try to persuade their students, if the children cannot involve themselves in school as much as they would have wanted because of these uniforms, then they would only be able to achieve very little with the discomfort at hand. The final argument points out that school uniforms have no relation to violent behavior. It cannot be helped that there are different forms of violence within the campus. But school uniforms cannot change the behavior or hide the weapons completely. The facade will not change the intent.

There is a cliche that goes: one cannot change a person overnight. How will uniforms do what a person cannot? According to Violeta Moutal, when claims rose that uniforms can reduce violence in schools, it was not supported by academic research. Although there were testimonials that school uniforms can support the decline of these rates, it still failed to establish uniforms as a primary factor to instigate change in a potentially violent student. The Debate Central website by the University of Vermont (2000) also affirms this claim regarding the relationship between what one wears and what one can academically achieve.

Clothes might be a students’ means to express themselves but it seems unethical to take that in considering them as a potential threat in campus. As many have long been saying, do not be deceived by what is merely perceived. What a person wears is a representation of a his or her feelings and does not have a direct relation to the identity of the person. In summary, public school administrators should not implement school uniforms. The primary argument behind this claim is that school uniforms can be a form of limiting students from expressing themselves.

By putting a hindrance to how they receive their education, students become unable to expand their capabilities in becoming a well rounded person. They are repressed, and could have different reactions. In this light, school uniforms can also become uncomfortable for these students, which becomes another hindrance to how they receive their education. There are students who often feel discomfort in the design of their school uniforms, which may affect their overall academic performance. More importantly, school uniforms are not the answer to change the behavior of a student.

Although it can discipline a student from being disobedient, a behavior cannot be changed by what one is told to wear. The Better Choice In light of both arguments, a greater point is given to the opposition side regarding the matter of uniforms in public schools. The arguments against the use of school uniforms have presented ideas that are more inclined with the contemporary perspective. This means, that barriers are ideal to be broken than to be raised between inter-school relations. School uniforms may be claimed to lift the school pride, but is also stands as a label.

This may become a problem when there are negative implications involved. Furthermore, in this day and age, individuality is given priority. When the opposing arguments mentioned that school uniforms have a way of limiting a student’s freedom to express one’s self, then that student becomes a copy of a group instead of being his or her true self. Before, being different is almost the same as practicing witchcraft. It is taboo. But now, being different is the trend a lot of industries adapt, as every one asks the question “Why?

” It is important that each person is able to attain their education without any form of hindrance or discomfort. It is also their right to receive this education, despite challenges in their economic and social statuses.
