Throughout the dawn, hurricane Pablo has made a landfall, bringing heavy rains and strong winds in almost all parts of Davao Region. This went on up until 6:00 p.m., when the Pablo completely left Mindanao. The storm triggered extensive damage in Mindanao, leaving thousands of people homeless and more than 600 deaths.

After hitting Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley provinces, Typhoon Pablo crossed the southern and central regions of Mindanao, cutting power to two provinces and triggering landslides.

More than 170,000 people fled to evacuation centers. Initially, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council advised the people of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro to prepare for the impact of the storm, as they did not want to repeat what happened last year when Sendong struck in Mindanao, which had hit when people were asleep and had caused a large number of deaths. In the aftermath of the typhoon, the sights in the Davao region were devastating. Countless bodies were found lifeless, houses were destroyed, trees were uprooted, and those people who were still breathing were just terrified.

A week after typhoon Pablo pounded Visayas and Mindanao, the most affected communities have yet to start picking up the pieces and starting reconstruction. Davao Oriental provinces bore the effect of the typhoon’s fury. While Compostela Valley, where the highest death tolls recorded, rescuers continue to search for survivors. Typhoon Pablo has left 1,300 people either dead or missing and is estimated to have caused PHP 14 billion in damages to infrastructure and agriculture.
