Two Sides of The Same Coin: Afghanistan And America

In war neither side wins. Our country has fought in war many times in the past but never one like the stagnant war in Afghanistan. 17 years later and no progress. War can be defined by two words; triumph and tragedy. To first understand the triumph and tragedy in the Afghanistan war, we must understand the background that started it. The united states didn’t like the fact that the Taliban offered safe haven by having training camps in Afghanistan back in the 90’s and they increased pressure in Afghanistan, so they could hand over their leader Osama bin Landin.

When al Qaeda attacked on September 11th it was a turning point for the United States. Shortly after this president George bush signs the “Bush administration” and allows his military to use force against those responsible for the attacks. President Bush saw invading Afghanistan as the only option to combat terrorism; in addition to this the Bush administration allowed eavesdropping on U.

It wouldn’t be wise to continue this war and should be dropped because recent fighting has shown that all this fighting hasn’t made the country more secure or stop the slow growth of Taliban influence and control over given districts. Knowing all this I can now understand and explain the tragedy and triumph that can come out of the entire Afghanistan war. The civilians/survivors who are affected by war is the real tragedy because they must grow and live with pain and fighting.

Another tragedy is the cost of war/ money going to the military and American soldiers dying. The triumph that can come from this war is the outcome and bringing us and other nations together to stop a terrorist group. Another triumph that can come from this war is that everyone knowing and experiencing the pain from war and being one step closer to creating peace.

victims of war. Whenever war has occurred the victims and soldiers are the ones who take the biggest hit. Buildings can be rebuilt, the ravaged lands can grow grass again but those who were born during the war, lived during the war, fought during the war then experienced the lasting effects of the war. These people are affected mentally and scarred but must live with the burdens of others who decided to go into war. “When man opened his mind to the idea of love, he also opened his minds to hate” Mothers love their children and hate anyone who would harm them, Soldiers love their country and hate those who threaten it. This creates violence between nations because a lot of people love their country and the moment it feels threaten our first reaction is violence.

However, violence isn’t always the answer and when George bush decided to go into Afghanistan I could understand where George bush was coming from, but Al Qaeda wanted to end US influence, so a bombing campaign against Taliban forces would just create more conflict. Losing by wining. At the end of war our nation and people suffer but still we go into war with no real motive. “The US. and Afghan government forces may not be losing, but there is no clear evidence that they approach any form of winning” as stated by Anthony Cordesman and if it continues it can turn into something big and unnecessary. For example, the USA caused destruction all around the world, Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings, for its version of 'peace'. USA is a big target for the countries that have suffered under its imperialism. thus, leading to a fear induced peace temporarily for a generation or 2.

Then nations would once again fight and repeat this cycle of war. Peace could crumble after a few generations and nuclear war would happen again. So, this just shows how that war and conflicts after WW2 is pointless because eventually war will just happen again but instead of facing a problem like this, we could instead run away from it. knowing we’re capable of nuclear war, running away from that vision of WW3 with Nukes can in some way lead to peace. Humans are better at running away from their problems than running towards their goals. because pain and suffering exist that means peace and tranquility must exist as well. On the road to utopia you get dystopia and maybe u may never even reach utopia. Our goal in life isn’t to achieve peace or tranquility it is to run away from suffering and total disaster, carrying a load worth carrying and by doing that our life.

Has more meaning. The twin towers memorial is a symbol as what humans can achieve through cultivation even in times of suffering and even more symbolic that the United States continues to strive after the destruction, which leads into the triumph that comes from war. You must know and feel pain in order to know peace? I believe that achieving peace through friendship and uniting individuals is a naive and brash way of looking at achieving peace; Imprudent even. The world is in a never-ending cycle of hatred and death. And that the only way to achieve true peace is through the experience war, essentially by every person knowing pain, they would cease to fight each other, thus creating peace. This philosophy is possible through understanding.

Once everyone has felt the same pain, they would not want to experience it again and they would all understand what pain feels like. Which could breed peace; hence the triumph from the Afghanistan war and every other war. The Utilitarian theory created by a philosopher Jeremy Bentham, that focuses on results rather than rules. You could essentially achieve the greatest good for the greatest people. I’m not saying war is a good thing, but WW2 really did make people realize the horrors of war. Since WW2, every conflict since has been very minuscule in comparison. So, in theory, Utilitarian philosophy does work. War only creates more war, which is why the united states must run away from it. Trying to understand where Al Qaeda stands. Osama bin laden and his Al Qaeda group are responsible for the terrorist attacks on the world trade center and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

We now celebrate this day and call it “9/11” or “Memorial Day” because America came together and moved forward and kept on striving and prospering. Osama bin laden is fighting for one goal. To end all American influences in the middle east and to “replace the al-Saud dynasty in Saudi Arabia”. Osama bin laden set up his own guerrilla and terrorist training camp for Arabs flocking to Afghanistan. founded Al Qaeda in 1988 and means “the base” in Arabic. I wonder if Osama bin laden sees himself as the hero of his story because maybe he believes what he is doing is right, on the other hand he could be one of those type of people who want to see the world burn.
