A computer network is a digital telecommunication network that allows computer devices connected to it to share resources. Computer devices connected to a network share data with each other using cable media or wireless media which are known as data links.
A network is a collection of computers, servers, network printers, mainframes connected to each other to share data. At TVC I worked with LANs (Local Area Network - a computer network that connects computers within a limited area.) and Wireless networks. All office computers and network printers are connected to the internet via LAN cables. The major network series used are 10,50,60 and 90. IP addresses on 90 series were mainly used by video editors to connect to the NEXIO server, the 10, 50 and 60 series were used other staffs in their different departments. We also had servers on the different series so the computer devices on a particular series can access data stored on that server or on another system connected to the same network. Network printers also work based on this concept, only computer systems on the same series as it can make use of that network printer.
This is a hardware device that allows a user control more than one computer systems from one video monitor, keyboard and mouse. They are also used to control a group of servers, as well as to save desktop space when multiple computers are used by one user. These switches may have standard VGA (Video Graphics Array), DVI (Digital Video Interface), USB (Universal Serial Bus), mouse and keyboard sockets, while others may use a custom combination cable (KVM cable) that plugs into one socket on the switch. TVC has some KVM switches in the CER room to control a good number of servers from one KVM, most of them could take up to 9 desktops.
Wireless routers are devices that provide access to the internet or a private computer network, it performs the functions of a router and also includes the functions of a wireless access point. In order for devices on the network to connect to the internet, the router must be connected to a modem. Most routers have a specific ethernet port that is designed to connect to the ethernet port of a cable or DSL modem in order to provide access to the internet.
A network switch can be defined as a communication hardware device that centralizes communications among multiple connected devices in one LAN. Network switches are capable of inspecting incoming messages as they are received and directing them to a specific communications port (this is called packet switching). A switch determines the source and destination addresses of each packet and forwards data only to the specific devices.
A server manages all network resources and it is often dedicated to perform only server related tasks. A server can be defined as a computer program or a device that provides functionality for other programs or devices called "clients". Servers are known to contain more powerful processors than a normal desktop computer, they support multiple processors, multiple cores and multiple threads so a lot of virtual machines can reside in a single server without any compromise in performance. Some types of servers are:
These are numerical labels assigned to computing devices connected to a computer network or networks that use the internet protocol for communication. I mainly worked with IPv4 during my internship, IPv4 defines an IP address as a 32-bit number. The computer networks at TVC make use of Class C IP addresses, with the address range of 192.0.1.1 to 223.255.254.254.

Also known as terminating a network cable. This is the process of making an ethernet or phone cable by one's self-using mostly a crimping tool, a cable stripper, an rj45(for ethernet cables) or rj11(for phone cables) and a LAN tester (to make sure the cable works). This is an easy and useful skill.
STEP 1: I first measure the Cable
STEP 2: Then I strip the cable using a cable stripper
STEP 3: I prepare the exposed wires, and arrange them following the right color code. E.g. for an ethernet cable I follow the color code below from left to right:
This wire configuration used above is the T-568B configuration. It is the most common configuration.
STEP 4: I collect the wires neatly arranged into a flat line, making sure none of the wires jumped position. I straighten them.
STEP 5: I trim the tips of the wires by cutting off the uneven ends using a wire cutter, some crimping tools come with a wire cutter of its own.
STEP 6: I insert the wires into the RJ45 and crimp by inserting the prepared plug in the crimping tool and squeezing the handle.
STEP 7: I go ahead and terminate the other end of the cable
STEP 8: I test the cable by inserting both ends into the two parts of a LAN tester and checking to ensure there are no jumps.
These are used to connect one networking device to another in order to share data or connect to the internet. Common Ethernet network cables consist of four pairs of wires, each pair containing a solid colored wire and a strip of the same color. These wires are usually bundled together for termination using an RJ-45 cable connector. The two wiring standards for RJ-45 wiring are the T-568A and T-568B standards.
These two wiring standards are used to create the two major types of Ethernet cables we have which include:
While the straight-through cable connection is used for connecting computers or devices directly to the Ethernet switch, the cross-over cable is utilized to either connect two computers directly without a hub/switch or connect a computer to a router.
A patch panel is a hardware assembly, it is usually mounted on a rack, it contains ports that manage incoming and outgoing ports
Strip the cable using a cable stripper then untangle the wires and smoothen them
Most patch panels come with color coding printed on them, so follow the color code appropriate for your network set up, if you've been terminating cables using the T-568A standard then that's the standard you should keep using
Push the cables down using the punch down tool or sometimes cable strippers come with a pushdown tool
Do this to every port, when it's all done go ahead and mount on the provided rack
