Tuckman's Model of Group Development

Coperative group behaviour is not aways easy to achieve, as one gives up part of one’s inepedence when participating in a group. Accordind to Tucman Forming is usually an ice braeking stage where every one is trying to figure out what their role will be in a particular project while waiting for a leader to stand up and guide them. Since this is the first stage therefore, mutual trust between inviduals is low, and people are generally ambigous about their roles.

(Robert Kreitner, 2004 , p. 413-415) The second stage, Storming is the most crucial stage in the group development process and is refferred to as the make and break stage.

The power politics usually erupts in this stage and those groups who survive move on to the third stage. (Robert Kreitner, 2004 , p. 413-415) In Norming stage. The power struggle is resolved by some group member and a feeling of belonging emerges. Also known as ‘Group Cohesivness’. Also at this stage gropu roles are more structured , defined and clear to the group members.

Group coperation and constructive communication at this stgae helps the group to achive more than an individual acting alone. It is the way to the success of organizations in today’s world. The trend is moving towards more flatter, knowledge and information based organization in which authority is delegated and in such organizations, teamwork is the most effective means of carryout that work. The difference between teams and groups are that first of all teams are formal than groups.

Authority is shared and they are mutually accountable. Teams are matured groups which have successfully overcome the decay stage or the stage that breaks up its members over some conflict. Teams consist of a few members, generally between 2 and 25. Effective teams are usually those which have less than 10 members. (Robert Kreitner, 2004 , p. 447) According to an Ecological Model, teams are judged for their effectiveness on two criterions namely performance and viability. Team Performance is said to be high when the result or output produced by the team is liked by the client or those to whom it is presented.

Team Viability is measured by the willingness of the team members to contribute and their satisfaction of team members. (Robert Kreitner, 2004 , p. 451-452) Good team players are those which have the adequate skills required to perform the required job. The readiness of team members to contribute towards the success of organizations is measured by a model called (KSA) model which means that the team members should have the appropriate knowledge skills and abilities. (Robert Kreitner, 2004 , 451- 454)
