Transgender Bathroom Law and the Discrimination Faced by the LGBT Community

LGBT rights have come a long way in the past 50 years. However, they still face a lot of discrimination. Many businesses and even entire states don’t really like the LGBT community. Even after same sex marriage has been legalized here in the united states, gay, lesbian and bisexuals are still having trouble being accepted within their workplaces. Businesses can and will fire them just for being gay, lesbian or bi. A person’s sexuality has nothing to do with work and it shouldn’t matter to anyone but themselves.

Transgender people are still facing a lot of problems in our society. Specifically in situations like deciding what bathroom to use. North Carolina’s transgender bathroom law which requires trans people to use the restroom corresponding to the gender they were born as is pretty ridiculous. On June 26, 2015, the United States Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage would now be legal nationwide. While this solved a lot of problems within the LGBT community, people continue to be discriminated against.

According to an article on CNN, in most states, their employees can still fire them, their landlords can evict them and they can be denied service at hotels, restaurants or other businesses. In a survey taken by 662 gay, lesbian and bisexual people, 10% of them have been fired within the last five years due to their sexual preference.

It doesn’t make any sense for anyone in the LGBT community to be discriminated against like that. It’s the person’s life. Their sexuality really won’t affect their performance at work.

As of June 2015, only 21 states had laws banning companies from discriminating against employees based on sexual preference. Hopefully that number is much higher now. Out of everyone in the LGBT community, it seems that transgender people are the ones that are currently facing the most problems. North Carolina recently passed a bill titled the “Public Facilities Privacy and Security Act” which requires transgender people to use restrooms corresponding to the sex on their birth certificate. This law doesn’t make any sense. Women would probably feel uncomfortable if a man was in their restroom and men would feel uncomfortable if a woman was in their restroom. Kelly Lauren, a transgender woman posted a photo on her Facebook account with the caption “Do you really want me in the same restroom as your husband or boyfriend?”

With this law in North Carolina, it seems that someone could easily lie about their gender. For example, a man could easily say they were born a woman and go into the woman’s restroom and cause trouble. It would be better to just get rid of this law completely and let an actual trans woman use the woman’s restroom and vice versa, but if North Carolina does keep this law for a long time, trans people should have to prove that they are at the very least on hormones to begin the transgender process before they can just go into a restroom claiming they are trans. While the LGBT community has come a very long way within the past 50 years, they still face a lot of discrimination and it really sucks. At the end of the day, they are just as normal as anyone else. Their sexuality should not determine who they are as a person. The discrimination of LGBT people is so unnecessary and just needs to stop. They deserve to be treated like anyone else and people who hate on the community should really just mind their own business.
