Fahrenheit 451 conveys specific concepts such as freedom but also reveals the dangers of relaying on mass media for communication. Based on the novel it represents a Totalitarian government, where in our society we have a democratic government. In the novel in shows how television screens are dominating their homes and having radios consistently playing. Their type of government opens up a door to become aware of unpleasant aspects of society. Thus, society is shaped through the media and the media substitute for any real human contact, with the government or anyone else.

As long as people are entertained, the government seems to believe, they will be subservient and easily manipulated. If not, there is always the mechanical hound, another symbol for lack of significant contact, to seek out and destroy any protest.

However, this government does not seem that efficient in dealing with foreign policy and seems to ignore a real problem that leads to it becoming self-destructive. One other difference between totalitarian and democratic government is that firemen became the law instead of the police and acted as an executioner.

In a democratic government the will of people are ultimately supposed to rule. Which that adults that are citizens have the right to elect representatives who govern for society as one. This form of government has three branches: Judicial, executive, and legislative. Each branch of government has a specific job, such as executive branch that includes president and cabinet. This specific branch carries out the laws for the government.

On the other hand, totalitarianism permits no individual freedom. Often, totalitarianism differentiated itself as a dictatorship or tyranny by merging all political parties with fresh ones and pushing aside all legitimate, political and economic customs. To the absence of all others, the totalitarian state embraces some special purpose, such as industrial development or exploration. All facilities are aimed at achieving it, regardless of expense. Traditional social institutions and associations are being prevented and disbanded under totalitarian rule. The cultural structure is thus reduced, making individuals more likely to absorb into a single, coordinated flow. Contribution is subsequently stimulated in authorized government organizations and then needed. A large scale of violence may occur more in a totalitarian rule .

Books are being destroyed and burned leaving people to only depend on technology. The destruction of knowledge shows how society does not have a true understanding of the knowledge they cannot just obtain from technology. Books play an extensive role in the society we now have today. In our world today people are demanding for better, more advanced technology, we have grown into a more technological society. People now are still trying and want to make faster and stronger computers, cars, monitors. Technology allows people to be able to stay inside and watch television and not have to leave the house as much. The consequence of this is people have less interaction with the world and other people. Also, the media is keeping people from knowing what is really going on in the world. TV parlor in an attempt to illustrate how addiction to technology can isolate the members of a society. Early in the novel, Mildred is captivated by the parlor walls to the point where she asks Montag for a fourth wall to complete their parlor.
