To what extent does source G challenge ‘the angel in the house’ described in source E and C? Source G conveys a negative image of ‘the angel in the house’ and the intolerableness of such a life but it highlights the selflessness of women in this period.

Source G challenges ‘the angel in the house’ ideology to a great extent as it describes women to having no ‘’occupation of importance except ‘suckling their fools’,’’ whereas source E compares a woman’s occupation ‘as with a commander of an army or the leader of an enterprise, so it is with the mistress of the house’.

Source E describes ‘the angel in the house’ as a great importance and without ‘the mistress,’ the house would seize to exist as this controlled and respected place, just like the army. However source G challenges this and says women have no important job but being highly dependent on their husband, by ‘suckling their fools’.

This highlights negatively what source C says about how ‘she leans and weeps against his breast and seems to think the sin was hers’ to an ideal Victorian women this is exactly how women should be behaving and what is expected of her.

But, source G contradicts this and says that women are being weaned and they’re being treated like infants. Source C and E suggests how ‘the angel in the house’ should be like, she is domestic, ‘well for the mistress to make a round of the kitchen and other office.’

Endless love towards her husband/children, ‘she loves with love that cannot tire’ and taking the blame – even if it is not her fault, ‘she leans and weeps against his breast and seems to think the sin was hers’.
