Three Major Leadership Styles and Ethical Leadership

This paper discusses different leadership styles of ethical leadership, including the 3 major styles of leadership today seen by many. The models in this paper include The Leadership Experience, Lewins leadership styles and Lacey's mission on Characteristics of an ethical leader. We will go over moral and ethical traits of an ethical leader today, followed by the author's plan of action that will bring about a positive ownership on part of all employees. Ethical Leadership in the 215t Century As an ethical leader today one must show strength and courage every day.

Each and every day every leader is faced with ethical decisions and has been like that for as long as leaders have been around . It takes certain qualities and traits to be an ethical leader. Not only must you have these qualities and traits we are going to talk about but you must be able to act on them and not wait. One of the biggest things is letting an issue go to long instead of acting upon it the moment it is brought to your notice.

3 styles of today's ethical leadership are the followin transformational, spiritual and authentic leadership. These are talked about in Ethical leadership: A review and future direction by: Michael E. Brown. These 3 styles will be brought back up and talked about more in the next couple pages of this paper. We will break down each styles and talk about the pro's and con's of the styles that are used today and in the future to come Personal Profile I as a leader today in my company feel I demonstrate some really good qualities as a leader.

As I have progress throughout the years I have had the trainings and read the books on what it takes to be a leader or how to be a leader. I do believe a leader can always learn new ideas and new ways to handles issues, but you cannot be taught to lead. I feel leadership is something you have or do not have. Some people are born a great leader and that's what they know. I have always had a sense of leadership growing up on sports teams or leading projects in school. I feel learning leadership while growing up can really help in the later years. Team sports and school project functions can really improve your communication. It forces you at a young ge to communicate on a leader level. Communication is a very key part in being a leader. If you do not know how to communicate or communicate in the wrong way you will be not respected or possible be taken the wrong way. Without communication you will not have the out comes as a leader and more than likely fail at whatever you are leading. Along with communication you must be able to use that communication and develop the people around you. As a leader you are always looking to take that next step in leadership and move to the next level, but I have learned if you do not use yours leadership skills to help develop someone who believes in your leadership you will not be able to make that next step. Use your skills to create someone who is viewed as a leader and develop their skills to better our skills As I have lead many different things in my life to this point I have found that if you do not enjoy what your leading or do not seem interested the harder it will be to lead the people around you.

My current position I hold as a manager I love and very passionate about. When you as a manager or a lead show you care and en t of it will pay off and bring more people over the fence I have seen it on a daily basis. Along with this comes being able to have the guts to stand alone and look ridiculous. I recently took a class that talked about the shirtless dancing man and how a leader can start a movement, First Follower: Leadership nce to view this video and are looking Lessons from Dancing Guy. If you have never had a cl for a good leadership video to show I would use this one. It talks about one guy standing up having the guts to do what he believes and getting people to join in. When they do join in he embraces them as people and makes it all about them and not about him. This is what I have really taken from the video is that a leader is the leader but without everyone else you have no one to lead so make it about them and leads me in two my next leadership point. As a leader you must acknowledge and reward the people around you for the job they do, if this is done right and ethically correct it is a great way to build your team and have more success at being a leader. Each and every person wants to be rewarded for what they do and what they bring to the table and as long as the reward it done correctly and done the same for each person across the board than this is expectable After doing research I found that the Isabel Briggs Meyers Typology TestTM was one of the best leadership style test in my opinion on the internet that I could find. After taking the ypology test I was given the score of ESTJ (extravert, Sensing, Thinking and Judging). ESTJ's thrive on order and continuity. Being extraverted, their focus involves organization of people, which translates into supervision. ESTIs promote the work ethic. Power, position and prestige should be worked for and earned. I agree with these results 100 percent.

I have always believed you have to work for what you want it does not just come to you by sitting around waiting. Leadership Styles In 1939, Kurt Lewin developed Participatory Leadership Styles, identifying three different styles of leadership (Lewins Leadership Styles). Authoritarian leadership (Autocratic) usually provides clear expectation on how that want it done, when they want it done and how it should be done. Authoritarian leaders like to make independent decisions with little input. The Participative leader (Democratic) is generally the most effective leader. They often offer guidance but also participate in the group and allow input. Participative leaders encourage participation. Delegative (Laissez-Faire) leader offers little to no guidance and leaves all decisions up to the group. This style can be highly effective but can lead to roles not defined and little to no motivation. There are many references that a great leader does not just use one style but has a way of using all three styles at different times. The Style that best describes me as a leader would be Participative leader. I accept and encourage input from the team. I feel the only way you can take ownership of something and actually feel like you are part of the team is if you have input and are able to voice your thoughts and see them matter. I was this way before I was a leader I liked to be part of a team that let me have input and I have taken this same concept with me into leadership. The team has to take ownership of the team before they can really understand what they are doing. The more involved they are the more everyone is on the same page. At Ohio State University in the 1950's there were studies done that found two critical characteristics in leadership. This research was based on questionnaires to leaders and subordinates.

These are known as Leader Behavior Description Questionnaires (LDBQ) and Supervisor Behavior Description Questionnaires (SDBQ). The two styles found at OSU were consideration style and initiating style. Consideration is the degree to which a leader acts in a friendly and supportive manner. He is there for the team and lets them make the goals and work towards them he is there as support to the team. Next was the initiating style in the degree to which leaders define and structure his roles and the roles of others for the group. He is the final say so the team is his and will run as planned. Team has little say so to what is structured Next what I found was a social learning theory that was used to explain outcomes of ethical leadership. It was used to shed light on why some people's traits of a leader and situational influences are related to how he is seen by his followers. According to the theory the leaders to be seen as ethical leaders they must be attractive and credible leaders. This theory helps explain how ethical leaders influence the members of the team. Most people look outside resource of guidance. Ethical of themselves for ethical guidance and ethical leaders are a leaders are credible because they practice what they preach. As Bandura noted "If models do not abide by what they preach, why should others do so."  Ethical Situation In the business of environment of the 21"t century companies face every size of ethical issues every day. Ethical issues include concepts such as integrity and trust, but more complex issues include diversity, decision making, compliance and governance. The most ethical issues that any work place is faced with are integrity and trust. Trust between you and your customers can determine your company's outcome. If you keep a high level of trust with your customer the possibilities are endless but once that trust is broke you might lose that customer at worst or if you do not lose them that trust will most likely not ever be the same.

A lot of workplaces have failed do to integrity and trust. Enron might be the biggest example to a company that has failed due to lack of integrity. Next ethical issue that is so common in the work place is diversity issues. Diversity begins with hiring a diverse workforce, enforcing equal opportunities. You will know when diversity is achieved; every employee is able to enjoy the job and the environment of the work place . If you maximize each employees values your company will see great success , not only that it will also be a great place for people to work and will be enjoyable. By creating an environment like this you are likely to keep your employees true to you and will have a low turnover. According to diversityinc Sodexo company is in a class by itself when it comes to diversity, they were ranked number one out of the top 50 companies based of diversity. Sodexo s the leader in using diversity metrics to quantify and impact its business goals. Sodexo's focus as a diversity leader is external as well as internal. The company is involved in more than 130 diversity events a year. As this company has shown that being a diversity leader pays off and will take you to the top. The next ethical issue hits home to me since I work in aviation, it is compliance. Compliance is one of the biggest items I push as a leader. No leader should ever ask an employee to go against compliance.

If compliance is broken especially in aviation your work place can be shut down with no questions asked. Compliance is huge in aviation; it is what keeps the flying public safe in the sky. If one single person is not compliance just for one minute it could possible bring down a plane out of the sky. The fourth largest tax-preparation firm in Ohio ITS financial LLC was shut down in 2013 for compliance issues. "Every company is just one bad decision or one 'bad employee' away from a scandal. One scandal away from a salacious headline and one headline away from a flood of lawsuits." This quote from William Lytton, former executive vice president and general counsel of Tyco international. Noncompliance can ruin corporate reputations, shatter financial performance, and destroy careers, families and lives. So in a recap to be an ethical leader you need to follow the characteristics set forth in this paper and always be complainant, have integrity and be as diverse of a company as can be. Be open to listen to you employees and help them get to where they want to get in return you will grow as a leader in return has a great Ethical Career.
