Thoughts Have a Huge Effect on the Body

Thoughts have a huge effect on the body. People create their own fears and twist their own reality. Thoughts can construct our reality as easy as it can destroy it. People can corrupt their own minds because fear affects perception. Fear is dangerous and it exists every day and everywhere. It lives inside of the human body. People fear themselves, people fear others, people fear pain mentally and physically, we fear what people think of us. We live in fear. Fear is an instinct that every person has, and the purpose of fear is to prevent people from a dangerous situation, but some fears are irrational which can inhibit people from doing their everyday tasks or meeting people.

People use fears against one another. They manipulate a person to think they aren't good enough. Eventually, there becomes a point where they actually start to believe it. In the short story "Lusus Nature" there is a female who is treated as an outcast because she is different.

She was morphing into something humans had never seen. She had "pink teeth, yellow eyes, red nails, and hair sprouting from her chest and arms"(Atwood 263) Her family had a lot of resentment towards her and had the fear their family would lose their reputation. The purpose of fear in "Lusus Nature" is to prove that irrational fears can lead to unheard of circumstances. The fear of not being accepted lead to the suicide of the narrator. They kept her hidden, so people wouldn't know what she had actually become.

She wasn't a monster. She was the same girl she was before she got porifera, Yet she was treated as a thing. Her grandmother referred to her as a demon, and her sister is blaming her for not being married. ""Curse or disease, it doesn't matter." Said my older sister. "Either way no one will want to marry me if they find out""(Atwood 261). Lusus Naturae' had stated "She had her own ideas, which involved puffballs and stump water. Once she held my head under water in which dirty clothes were soaking, praying while she did it. That was to eject the demon she was convinced had flown through my mouth and was lodged in my breastbone"(Atwood 261) All because of an appearance and voice change. The narrator's fear of not being accepted caused her to forget about herself, and only think of the well being of her family, and doing whatever it takes to be somewhat still apart of the family if you can even call it that. Everyone who was around Lusus Naturae' feared her, but everyone's angst was irrational. She was never going to hurt anyone, except herself when she realized everyone's happiness was more important than her own.

Fear is a motivator. Is either makes people a coward or forces people to face their fears head on. It's like the saying deer in headlights, but the roles are switched. People are suddenly faced with a fear and unaware of what their going to do in that moment in time. A person can stand and get hit or they can make a run for it and face their fears. The purpose of fear in "The Walking Dead" is motivation. Rick has something to fight for; his family. Throughout the episodes watched in class, Ricks motive is finding his family. Doing whatever it takes achieve his goal and face his fear of the unknown. Rick wakes up from a comma with no one around and unsure what is going on around him, but eventually, he saw what he was up against. The zombie apocalypse. The first thing Rick says after walking into his house is "Lori· Lori... Carl.. .Carl!"(Days Gone Bye) Rick and Lori are in a rocky stage in their relationship, despite that the first thing Rick yells is her name, and shortly after Carl's. Rick lays on the floor sobbing then he looks at his hands and says "Is this real? Am I here?... Wake up" (Days gone Bye). After this sentence is when Rick realized he had to find his family. Rick killed zombies, and was hurt by having to kill people who were at one point in time innocent, in order to survive. The motivation he Rick had was because of the fear of never seeing his family again.

Another example of how fear motivates people is in the movie "Alien." Ripley is a female officer and pilot navigator. She is a rule follower, and follows protocol. In the end she is the only one who survives because, she is a rational thinker. Ripley's fear is of the alien, but her motivation comes from wanting to survive. She's made it this far, and is the only one left. Her goal is live. In the last scene Ripley thought she escaped the ship, but little did she know she was not alone. She suits up, and buckles in. Getting the alien as close to her as possible without it attacking. While repeating the lyrics " you are my lucky starr· lucky, lucky, lucky" (Alien) When the alien is close enough she pushes the button which opens the hatch, and the alien is sucked into space. Motivation to survive will help people face their fears.

Without fear people wouldn't have the need to be courageous. In the short story "St. Lucy's Home for Girls Raised by Wolves" Mirabella refused to change herself to be like everyone else. She was courageous enough to take a stand for what she believed in. This story depicts how each girls transition from wolf to lady like is very different, but not all the girls changed. Mirabella was the most resistant to change. Mirabella feared losing her roots, as to where her sisters feared not fitting fitting in with society. In the end of the story Mirabella was kicked out of the school, and didn't go back home to her family. "I didn't want to face mirabella. Instead I packed a tin lunch· with a little note: "Best Wishes!"" (Russell 276). She was courageous enough to pave her own path in life and wasn't going to stand for anything else. She didn't let the fear of not fitting in affect her, as it did to her older sisters.

Fear is like a domino effect. Once one person is scared of a situation, it spreads and motivates people to prevent a situation from happening again. Fear causes people to be cautious and take precautions when regarding dangerous situations. In June of 1919, after world war one, people were so afraid that reality would come back and happen again that they took a lot of precautions. They were fearful that it would happen again, so they decided to "Take away Germany's entire air force, most of its navy, and it's army was limited to 100,000 people. Germany was also forced to give up some of its land to France, and pay for the cost of the war." they paid it off in 2010. The world was determined not to have another world war one. They were fearful of reality that once was happening, would happen again. Or they feared the worst reality had yet to come and prefered not to find out. Fear caused these men and women to take precaution during a hard time in life where "over 40 million had either died or had fatal injuries" (how many people died in ww1)

In order to understand the purpose of fear, people must understand the purpose of feelings.
