"1984" by George Orwell - Censorship Problems

Categories: Dystopia

There many dangers associated with control over information, history, and the media. In 1984 by George Orwell, the party controls every information related to the past and present and writing its own ends to the story. The party also does not allow the people to keep records of the past such as newspapers, pictures, and documents. Due to that, people tend to forget the past, and memories become unreliable to the limit where they believe everything the party has to say. This is very similar to the text by the people as Censorship.

In the article "learning the forbidden history of China so they can censor it" by Li Yuan (The New York Times) it talks about how the recent 24-year-old graduates knew a little about the 1989 Tiananmen Square Crackdown. China built the world's strongest and extensive censorship system under the control of President Xi Jinping, who wanted the communist party to have control over the internet and media. Sources have been more sensitive, and the punishments are severe.

Mr. Li works for Beyondsoft, a Beijing tech company that takes on the censorship work for the companies out there. He mentions how the company was creating an app, to review potentially politically sensitive information on a news aggregating app. There are other workers from Beyondsoft working on this app in the western city Xi'an going over the details to block sensitive information because some people in China find pornography offensive. In the other article "Trump's Censorship of Science will kill people" by Gleb Tsipursky (Newsweek) talks about how Trump's administration lead the Centre of Disease Control (CDC) to change the "scientific-based" and "evidence-based" with "CDC bases its recommendations on science in consideration with community standards and satisfaction.

So basically, they're mending the truth to something that's not true and sells it to the community the way they want to hear it. Therefore, much like in 1984, modern American's must be aware of a government lies to its people for its own gain.

In the book 1984, the party lies to the people by using their powerful system of censorship and many other ways like doublethink, manipulation, brainwashing, etc. The party has a different kind of ministries such as the ministry of truth, love, and peace. It doesn't exactly sound the way it works because the ministry of love is used to harass the citizens, peace leads war and truth is the facts and stories made up by the party. The citizens never question the party for their actions because they simply do what they're told to do. The society lives in fear of the party because if they don't listen to what the party says, the citizens go through severe punishment such as being tortured by their worst fears and the worst is to be erased, vanished or evaporated as if you never existed.
