Why I choose Margaret Atwood as my research topic. This is because of her significant history at an early age until present. The time-period is post-modernism. The author is Margaret Atwood. The public pays attention to her as a poet in the 1960s with her collections Double Persephone 1961, winner of the E.J. Pratt Medaled. Her poetry explored the distinctions between life and art and the normal with human creation. She used duality in the relationship between the opposites. But, the women in her writings are not passive.
“She has become a strong voice for women, the environment, and for human rights in general” (Encyclopedia). “Margaret Atwood was born in 1939 in Ottawa, Ontario. She earned a B.A. from Victoria College, University of Toronto, and an M.A. from Harvard. She is the author of over fifteen books of poetry” (Atwood).
Most of her work was translated into many languages and published in more than twenty-five countries. Atwood won many awards and honors, such as a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Ida Nudel Humanitarian Award, a Molson Award, and Canada short fiction award.

She was named by Ms Magazine women of the year in 1986. Atwood started in poetry, one of her poems was Two-Headed Poems (1978). She wrote novels, such as The Blind Assassin, and fiction books like A Quiet Game. Atwood interests in environment came from her childhood. When she was living in the woods with her family, without electricity or running water. Her father was collecting insects that hurt the forests and reports to the government.
She spends her time playing and reading with her older brother in the woods.
One of her books Oryx and Crake, the readers will notice the powerful meditation on how education that splits scientific and aesthetic ways of knowing produces unawareness and an injured world. When the family moved to the city, it was a change of a lifestyle. “Atwood is constantly aware of opposites—self/other, subject/ object, male/female, nature/man—and of the need to accept and work within them” (poets).
She was influenced by one of the icons of the twentieth-century women’s movement “Simone de Beauvoir”. She developed a sense of feminist sensibility and she explains about the typical mother who she was happy doing things outside what socially acceptable. Most of Atwood poems and novels is about real stories and documented occurrences. She wrote about the experiences of real loss and grief, the women being used and helpless, and the relationship between women positive and the negative. Atwood is an active writer since 1961 to 2006 and still going. “Atwood believes a writer must consciously work within his or her nation’s literary tradition, and her own work closely parallels the themes she sees as common to the Canadian literary tradition” (poets).
