The Weather And Climate

Categories: Weather And Climate

Mutualism is a type of symbiosis where both organisms benefit from the interaction. Working together is such an awesome evolutionary strategy that we see examples of mutualistic relationships across biology (even in microbes!). Pick an example of a mutualistic relationship and tell me about it. What are the species? What does each one brings to the relationship? How have these species evolved together to strengthen the interaction (i.e. coevolution)? Mutation is the mutual relationship between individual of two different species, where none are capable of living separately.

In biology one of the examples is lichens, algal and fungi. In the mutation process one or both the species are harmed. The lichens are composed of matrix formed by fungus within it al the alga is embedded. The alga depends upon the fungus for water, minerals and protection.

Fungus receive carbohydrate prepared by the alga. The species are benefitted here, the fungus grows around the constant supply of food produced by alga.

Whereas, fungus protects the alga. For instance, in many species of tall trees there is a relationship with the pollinator species of coevolution. It means that given tall spices can be pollenate only by its partner species and no other species. In ecology, a “disturbance” is a temporary change in environmental conditions that dramatically affects the ecosystem, like droughts, fires, flooding, windstorms, etc. The intermediate disturbance hypothesis states that an ecosystem with a moderate amount of disturbance will have a greater diversity than ecosystems with high or low rates of disturbance (see figure below).

Why do you think this happens?

At high disturbances, most of the species get eliminated, leaving behind the most dominant species (insects) that can survive in the environment. So, at a low disturbance, the species (insects) which are dominant competitively exclude the weaker ones from the community (increased competition/competitive exclusion) and at intermediate disturbances, organisms which survive during the early and late stages of succession can coexist, thus increasing diversity.  Your friend (maybe your friend is Oklahoma senator Jim Inhofe with his stupid snowball) is saying that snowy days are proof that climate change is a hoax. How would you explain to your friend the difference between weather and climate?

Ans: The difference of weather and climate is according to the time zone. Weather is what conditions of the atmosphere are over a short period of time (you check whether all the time when you plan for vacation, or maybe check into it before you go for a walk.) Climate is the condition of the atmosphere over relatively long periods of time, say for 30 years. When we talk about climate change, we talk about changes in long-term averages of daily weather. If summers seem hotter lately, then the recent climate may have changed. If springtime comes earlier now than it did 30 years ago it indicates a possible change in the climate. In most places, weather can change from minute-to-minute, hour-to-hour, day-to-day, and season-to-season. Thus, climate change has become a major concern for the world.

Climate, however, is the average of weather over time and space. In other words, climate is what you assume, weather is what actually happens. Climate change is often a charged debate. Many people see this as the greatest threat facing humanity, while others believe it’s real, but humans don’t contribute to it, and others suggest that it’s not happening at all (cough Jim Inhofe cough). As what will be one of the defining questions of our generation (and the ones that follow) it’s important to have an informed stance on this issue. So, tell me your thoughts on climate change. What do you believe? What is your evidence to support your position? How would you try to convince someone with a different opinion to join your side?

Do you think it’s important? Are you concerned about it? I want to hear your thoughts on the topic, and it’s OK to be completely honest. Ans I believe climate change is a real and currently happening due to lack of awareness and lack of human responsibility. Earlier, climate change used to take place because of carbon dioxide released from volcanic eruptions etc but also earth had enough sources for carbon sequestration through oceans and enough greenery (Forests) but now the oceans are already suffering from acidification and are overloaded with CO2 while there are not sufficient trees on the earth to absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. The current environmental events like extreme temperatures, cold waves and heat waves in Europe and Australia causing forest fires are clear indication of climate change.

There are many evidences that can prove that the climate change is a global issue and is real. If I meet a person who does not believe in climate change, I will ask him to collect data for CO2 levels increase since 1500 AD and to analyze the trend. I will also ask him to relate increase in CO2 with global temperature rise. I will try to tell him all the extreme weather events taking place and I will also ask him to feel this climate change. I hope he would finally understand that climate change is real. The most recent thing I will explain to him that - due to lockdown because of covid-19, there is decrease in CO2 levels and temperature all around the world and also the Ozone hole in South Antarctica has been healed (according to reports of NASA).

Yes, I think it’s a global issue and everyone should be concerned about it so that everyone’s future is safe and it can only be done by taking steps to fight with climate change together. Your carbon footprint is the amount of carbon dioxide emissions that result from you living your life. Name 4 ways in which you can reduce the size of your carbon footprint. Ans: Carbon Foot Printing: releasing of carbon dioxide gas into the atmosphere by the activity of human is called carbon foot printing. It can be measured as carbon dioxide emission in tons per year. Four ways to reduce carbon footprint are:

Drive: to reduce carbon footprint we can use either walking‚ carpooling or made transport helps to reduce release of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Diet: it has great impact on carbon footprint of person. Avoid packaged foods and processed food‚ red meat, rice as they are major source of carbon diet. Avoid A.C.: minimum use of air conditioner can help to reduce carbon footprint as a.c. is also responsible for carbon dioxide release. Using 4 R's: carbon footprint can be reduced by using 4R's i.e. Reduce‚ Reuse‚ Recycle and Refuse and it can be done by using disposable items like reusable cans.
