The traditional values and attitudes of Chinese society did play an important part in Adeline’s life, even though at times she wished to ignore these traditional values, she would not have had the same up bringing as she did without them. Therefore she would not have been able to have the same inspirations as she was given while growing up. Without these inspirations she might not have been able to write a book about her childhood in the same successful way that she did.

I also believe the book would not have been as effective if it weren’t for Chinese traditional values playing an important part in Adeline’s life. which in Chinese culture is an important factor to Chinese values. Adeline was also numerously treated like an outcast by her siblings , Adeline often feeling neglected by her father, as well as her not being able to have an as fortunate life as the life’s given to her older siblings and step-siblings by Niang, her step mother. I believe this is one of the main factors for Adeline being so successful with her book; her being independent gave her the courage to be an individual and write about her childhood.

After Adeline’s mother died giving birth to Adeline, her father re-married to a women named Niang, it was an arrange married. Niang was quite young and already had children of her own. Niang therefore became Adeline’s step mother. Niang decided to split her and her step children into separate parts of the house, with her children being on the second floor (closest to Niang), and her step children on the first floor.. This made Adeline and her siblings feel less special than Niangs children, thus creating tension in the house.
