The Role of Marketing in Sports

Categories: SalesTarget Market

After graduating from UCF, I hope to find myself working in a career that I find enjoyable and fulfilling. To accomplish this, I am aiming to be employed at a career that encompasses both my major, marketing, and an interest and hobby of mine, sports. It is for these reasons that I am targeting a job in the field of sports marketing. I personally believe sports marketing is a field that would challenge and engage me creatively and I can see myself working in the field for a long time.

Sports marketing is a field that involves working with sports teams, athletes, sporting brands, and sporting venues/events in order to create advertising campaigns across a variety of outlets, such as television, print, radio, and social media. A large portion of this field involves analyzing previous campaigns. Through the use different metrics, such as sales figures, brand awareness, and social media account growth, sports marketers can see how effective their campaigns were and areas that could be improved upon.

The typical entry level job in this field earns between $35,000 and $65,000 per year. Working as a sports agent, one can expect to earn between $25,000 and $100,000 per year to start. Sports marketing is also a field that offers significant room for growth, with experienced sports marketers earning upwards of $110,000 a year and established sports agents earning over $1,000,000 a year, though this figure is heavily dependant on their clients.

One of the reasons I believe I can achieve this target job is that the marketing field is growing at an above average pace, resulting in a relatively large demand for marketers. While the Bureau of Labor Statistics does not explicitly track data for the sports marketing field, they predict that jobs for Advertising, Promotions, and Marketing Managers will grow by 10% from 2016 to 2026. Keeping this information in mind, if my target field of sports marketing might not be available to me at first, it is reassuring to know that the marketing field as a whole is on the rise and that I can expect to find a job within the marketing field while I work on achieving my goal of being a sports marketer.

I believe that I do have what it takes to work within the sports marketing field and that I can succeed if presented with the opportunity. My creativity, drive, passion, and knowledge of the sports industry are all things that can benefit me during the journey of my career.
