Should the incarcerated have the right to vote while imprisoned? If so, based on what amendment? Should those who have served their sentences continue to have their right to vote restricted?
Prisoners should be entitled to vote. It is unjust to have it taken away from an individual because they have committed a crime. These individuals are still citizens and not everyone that’s incarcerated is guilty. Voting would make these people feel as if they’re a part of something bigger rather than themselves.
While incarcerated, they lose most of their freedom; they shouldn’t lose all of it. If prisoners were denied the right to vote when they’re released into society they will not respect their authority or laws. If letting prisoners vote can strengthen their ability to want to participate in society, do well and feel like they’re an essential part of the community, it is important.
This alone doesn’t only benefit the incarcerated individuals, but also the politicians running.
The 15th amendment states “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”. These individuals are citizens despite their wrongdoing. The different amendments for instance the 19th amendment gave women the right to vote. The 15th amendment gave slaves the right to vote but in all reality inmates are individuals who are known to be our generation of slaves so why can’t prisoners vote? They should have the opportunity to vote.
