The Rhetoric of Race and Christianity

A social identity refers to the inclination for individuals to organize themselves into distinct social categories as a result of perceived membership with various groups, the categorization of oneself and others into groups provides a system of identifying with or defining oneself within a specific social category. This identification is vital to declarings one's self-concept, and encourages a sense of belonging within an ingroup. This also allows an individual from a group to assign others into categories, which then allows them to make attributions about outgroup members.

The categorization of oneself and others into groups, leads an individual to make comparisons between themselves and those whose membership does not correspond with their own (Dunne 2018).

Eventually the racist rhetoric did begin to cling to Christian, as Clark began to introduce racial stereotypes about Black, Mexican, and Jewish residents living in the community, in order to establish prejudiced and discriminatory views in Christian. Stereotyping and prejudice are related to each other. They both involve a preconceived expectation of a group because of a generalized idea that exists within that group, they both serve the function of making one group feel superior to another.

In this case, the Neo-Nazis instilled the notion that the minorities were lazy and had to be on welfare and, and that hard working whites were being forced to work just to make enough money for themselves, only to have it stolen by the minorities and the power hungry Jews.

This struck a chord with Chistian, since both his parents worked long hours at work, didn’t have much money and barely spent time with him when he was a child, and was concerned that his younger brother may have to grow up in a situation like that.

What's going on in Christian mind is what’s known as frustration-aggression theory. Frustration-aggression theory states that people will resort to aggressive behavior if they are blocked (frustrated) in pursuing their goals, or gaining gratification. (Dill & Anderson 1995). When the cause of frustration is something that cannot be attacked, like in Chistian's case, his parents not being there during his childhood, and being bullied and isolated in school, or when the cause is too dangerous to take on, innocent victims who have nothing to do with the cause of frustration, often become scapegoats of this 'displaced aggression.' Stereotyping encourages scapegoating and racial prejudice, which are compatible with the frustration-aggression theory.

A group chosen as a scapegoat by the frustrated individual is far more variable than what they may realize. Widely held stereotypical beliefs simplify the process of labeling a scapegoat, thus the frustrated individual can simply hate them all without giving the matter further thought (Tiemann 2019).
