Greece has been a member of the European Union since 1981. Being a member of the EU is both a blessing and a curse since it has numerous advantages to offer but also disadvantages. One of the many positive things of this membership is that the EU has enabled people to travel freely across national borders. In addition to this, it's easier for greek citizens to use qualifications in different member countries cosequently, they can find a job abroad. (D. Dinan, 2005) What is more, free trade has helped to reduce costs for consumers.
(A. Alesina, I. Angeloni, L. Schukncht,2005) Last but not least, the EU membership has offered among nations.
EU countries are not into rivalry like they used to be in the past. One the other hand, For Greece, being a member of the EU has drawbacks as well. On the political side, there is a considerable loss of sovereignty. Greece as well as other European countries are sometimes bound to restrictions that aren't favorable to their economy and development.
(D.Panke, 2009) The most important disadvantage is the concentration of power. The EU has taken away political and economical power from its members and locate it to specific countries. To sum up, unboudtedly the EU membership has both positive and negative aspects. A question rises though: Can the advantages outnumber the drawbacks as fas as Greece is concerned?
