Conducting research, from my previous experience was a very difficult endeavor because it is something I do not understand. From the usual copy and paste attitude towards research, I wasn’t satisfied with the things I learned about research. I wasn’t taught very well how to write a proper research paper, all I knew was you either make a survey or conduct experiment, and I am sure that many students like me also felt this way as well. Back then, I did not know how research could be either quantitative or qualitative.
I didn’t even have the slightest idea how to start a research proposal. And it is very scary when you are asked to do something you do not quite comprehend.
In reading Creswell’s book entitled “Educational Research” along with thorough lectures and discussions, I was given a clear picture of how research could be done in an organized and efficient manner. I was able to recognize that there are actually logical steps that make research more systematic. I find Creswell’s book very informative. With it, I now have a framework to help me decide which path to take. Still, I won’t deny my difficulties despite all the information provided. I feel the pressure of reading overwhelming information with so little time along with the personal desire to learn and be familiar with the research processes discussed in the book.
Like everyone else approaching research, the question starts with, “What is Research?” Research, according to John W. Creswell, is a process involving the small set of logical steps. He added that research consists of three steps: posing a question, collecting data to answer the question and presenting an answer to the question. Payton (1979) also defined research as a process of looking for the specific answer to a question in an organized, objective, and reliable way. It makes sense that when you have a question; one thing that could help solve that problem is to look for answers, you can go to libraries and look for books or you can ask people who can provide the information you need. But I think research is not as simple as that because you have to consider so many things like the ethical issues that you need to be aware of before conducting research, the validity and reliability of your resources, who will be your respondents, where and when you will conduct your study, what sampling technique you will use, how you will collect your data, and the hardest part is how you will analyze and evaluate your data. I really wish research could be as easy as looking at the dictionary for meaning or asking a friend how old she is. But no, still I believe this is what makes research exciting. I agree with what Creswell said that in research you are solving a puzzle, it’s a little frustrating at first but when you get to finish it’s all worth it knowing that you’ve learned.
Educational research has taught me to treat research process through steps, to be resourceful enough to search for problems that I am interested to explore and solve, to consider the validity and reliability of sources, to make use of my free time reading journals and also to give due importance in revising statements from researchers. I truly enjoyed studying the methods of research because I know it would contribute to my growth as a researcher.
