“Emotional abuse is a form of interpersonal violence that encompasses all forms of non-physical violence and distress caused through non-verbal and verbal actions” (Stark 2015). This form of abuse is different from physical abuse because emotional abuse inflicts inner-psychological problems to the victims. These effects sometimes could not be seen by the eye and so are more difficult to identify. It has long been observed that people under stress experience-such as emotional abuse-have higher levels of illness, although the causal mechanism or mechanisms are unclear.

Students in Ohlone College who experienced emotional abuse are more likely to develop chronic stress and anxiety disorders that has negative effects on their mental and physical health; Student Health Services currently provides social services and counseling purposed in helping students cope with abuse and improving mental health. Identifying Emotional Abuse Emotional abuse is the culprit behind several vague physical symptoms. Physical issues and emotional issues are two very different things but somehow emotional abuse is able to cause such stress that the body actually afflicts to cause sickness.

Emotional abuse could be in many forms and can come from any kind of relationship. “Some kids live with emotional or physical abuse at home, while others live with it at school, where it goes by the name of a bully” (Jay 60). The abuser has some kind of power over the victims and manipulates ways to control them. They use tactics that cause the victims to feel defenseless and afraid. Parents who are under pressure and suffer mental illness(es) inflict inadequate bonds for their children.

As Jay mentions, parents with this kind of problem are labeled “identified patient”. Not all mental illness that parents suffer will cause emotional abuse but for some, that has interfered with the parent’s mood swing, unnecessary abusive words will be present. As already mentioned, parents suffering from depression and substance abuse experience higher levels of stress, including symptoms such as irritability, hostility, and anger, than parents, not suffering from these problems. Such negative emotions potentially lower the quality of the parent-child relationship by diminishing parental attachment to the child. Attachment is the emotional tie between children and parents—the closer the child is to the parent, the less likely the child will want to disappoint the parent by engaging in delinquent behavior.
