Feminism, the advocacy of women’s rights based on the equality of sexes. This trend that has been going on for years and years that has helped woman accomplish all over the world, gain independence, and helped woman gain their voice to stand up for what they believe is right. For example, the suffrage movement, that gave women the right to vote, inclusiveness of women, such as the increase of women holding powerful positions within the workspace, and sexual objectification, in cases such as women’s duties being seen more than being a mother and wife.
` Thus, I believe that feminism has been positive to the movement of women progression of being seen as more significant and productive within the world’s society.
It was almost one hundred years ago women were given the right to have a say in their political stance through the 19th amendment. Statistics state, “According to exit polls, 53 percent of voters in the 2012 election were woman.
” This implies that more than half of voters were women and help contribute to the process and the outcome of the presidential election. Also stated, “in the 2008 election, 10 million more women voted than men. This proves woman since given the opportunity to vote have taken advantage and have voiced their ideas and thoughts. Not only are woman voting, there are holding positions within the office to help make a difference. Hence, feministic views helped woman gain the right to democracy and be part of the decision making of choosing who represents our country.
Emma Watson once said, “Fighting for women’s right’ has too often become synonymous with man-hating.” When someone is fighting for what they believe, many people will disagree with your opinion. This is a reality because many people feel as if feminism is about woman being superior to men. This is a big misconception. Most feminist don’t want to feel superior to men they just want to feel as if they have the same opportunities and promise as their male counterparts do. Feminist want women to feel as if they have an opportunity of adding to the important conversations society has well too often put on as a responsibility to men.
Feminist use their voices to speak up about wrong doing and create awareness about the problem’s women face on a day to day based on their gender. Facts states, “A New Survey finds 81 percent of women have experienced Sexual Harassment.” (NPR.org) Another statistic stated, ‘Only 16 percent of men with documented histories considered themselves to be sexually abused’’ (1in6.org). Yes, being sexually abused does happen to both male and female but, no one can deny that women have a drastically higher rate of sexual harassment. Although Cases like this happen all the time. This seem to be overlooked and not taken seriously.
For example, the beginning of this year Bill Cosby was accused by woman for many allegations such as rape, drug enabled sexual assault, sexual battery, child sexual abuse, and sexual misconduct. The first accusations came from Andrea Constand who attested against Cosby. These women were called liars, money hungry, and that they were simply just looking for attention. All because they told the truth of something that was wrongfully done to them. By law what Bill Cosby did to her, and the list of other women was illegal, and he should be punished like any other person would have if they had been prosecuted. But many still believe that he is innocent even with all the women who testified against him. Many claim that if it really happened why did they wait so long to say anything about it? This instance shows that most women aren’t believed when men in superior are against them. That one man’s voice overpowers almost 60 women to be exact (BBC). Hence, the woman who came together to testify against him made their claim louder and finally they were able to be heard and then he was prosecuted and found guilty.
Feminism has grown heavily within social media outlets. People use it to spread word and gain popularity and make people aware of what feminist do around the world to help other women feel protected. #Metoo since the beginning of the trend earlier this year it has had over one million tags of a band of women coming together telling stories of when they were sexually assaulted. This helps woman gain confidence to share their stories and empathize with other women who have been in similar situations.
This is beneficial because society has the idea that women should never show vulnerability or just take it and move on when they are hurting. Also, this shows a positive image of women being there for each other. Many women are so quick to judge others because social standards put woman against each other and make them feel like they must compete to be relevant. Things such as if we wear the right clothes, have our makeup on point, or be in the expected place in our life to make it look like you have your life together. Impossible expectations that majority will never meet. Undoubtedly, many feminists use their voices to help women come together and stop misogynistic lifestyles going on around them.
Statistics state, “Gender pay gap remains at 20 cents .” 20 cents that may not seem like much. In any other case, I would agree 20 cents no big deal. Many people probably have more than that lying between their couch cushions. The point is some women have the same qualifications, same credibility, same capability, and possibly more. The hard work that women put in to be able to do the same job that men do, and they make 20 cents less regardless based on what genitals they have. This is an exact reason why there have been so many ratifications in the ERA many women have said enough to the equality based off the sexes. Many Feminist are wanting to be validated based on their hard work with the ratification of the Equal rights amendment that have put policies in place such as affirmative action to help women and others from being discriminated against.
As woman take over male dominated fields of work, you can see the growth of woman holding powerful positions. Jahana Hayes, Connecticut’s first African American Woman in Congress. Also, Kyrsten Sinema, the first openly bisexual person in the senate and Arizona’s first woman in the Senate. This shows the movement of how women of every kind have increased within holding political positions and that they have been pushed to be vocal and be an advocate for woman within the political stances. The Feminism movement isn’t just about woman’s rights, it is about all woman being treated as if they have an equal right to any opportunity they desire and not feeling as if their gender, race, or sexual orientation stops them. Not only is this an altering breakthrough for woman all over the world, this also breaks racial barriers and informal understandings that govern behaviors within politics.
In media, there are powerful messages that are given by brilliant women in the industry to help us encourage, change, and help us become more open to change. In Grey’s Anatomy, it exemplifies that all sorts of woman can hold powerful positions of leadership. For example, Meredith Grey, Head of General Surgery; Miranda Bailey, Chief of Surgery; Callie Torres; Head of Orthopedic Surgery. This series also encourages women to be the best version of themselves and always be ready to do whatever it takes to succeed. Meredith states, “In group settings men are 75% more likely to speak up than women, and when a woman does speak up, its statistically probable her male counterparts will either interrupt her or speak over her. It’s not because they are rude, its science. The female voice is scientifically proven to be more difficult for a male brain to register. What does this mean? It means in this world, where men are bigger, stronger, faster, if you’re not ready to fight, the silence will kill you.” This portrays powerful, positive women being in a “man’s” world but not letting that keep them from succeeding. Which helps women all over the world see that they can accomplish as well.
On the other hand, many may say that feminism isn’t what it once was and is now used as a way to manipulate and undermine traditional values. Additionally, many state that it causes segregation between sexes and comes off as discrimination on innocent men. Although in some cases, there are many valid points that can be made, but true feminists are only out to seek equality and safety for women. Feminism is always deemed as an act as woman overreacting and trying to partake in self-pity. No woman should have to fear walking the town alone at night, possibly being grouped by her boss because he thought she was asking for it, or not ever getting the chance to aspire and expand as her male counterparts do. Feminism helps women demand respect and helps people know that women are a force to be reckoned with. Thus, I believe feminism is a positive way to help change the world around us and help make a difference.
Conclusively, I believe feminism can help alter our society and change the way we have always viewed things. Feminism is a form of growth that America has acquired through years that will help us unify into a stronger nation. When women and men are able to live their lives together in peace it brings reconciliation. This is important because equality shouldn’t be something that is optional or when it is convenient, it should be given to every man, woman, race, and culture. No matter and never should be something that is exclusive. With all of what our society sees on a daily basis and the culture it allows feminism is valuable asset to our society.
