THE PICTURE OF DORIAN GRAY

THE PREFACE and its RELATIONS TO THE NOVEL
“The Artist is the creator of beautiful things. To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim”- Consider this with relation to Basil’s view on art, “It is not he who is revealed by the painter; it rather the painter, who is reveals himself” The Painting shows the “secret of (his own soul)
AESTHETICISM AND THE PURPOSE OF ART

THE PREFACE and its RELATIONS TO THE NOVEL
“There is no such thing as an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written. That is all.”- Relates to a book Henry gave to Dorian, a “yellow-bound book”, his morals and actions deteriorate thereafter. To Henry, he states that he was “poisoned with a book once”. This could be Wilde noting that Dorian scapegoats the book for his moral failure, however it was just something for Dorian to blame.
INFLUENCE AND MANIPULATION

PREFACE and its RELATIONS TO THE NOVEL
“All art is quite useless”- The purpose of Art. It is okay if one is to invest in something useless if one has designs to ‘admire it intensely’. Art is not didactic, we wish to see in it what is in our own heads, much like Dorian’s own portrait. But the beauty of art is that it reflects only the true beauty of itself, feigning superficiality, however, it proves that the art is less superficial than the speculator, one who assumes that the art manifests their own conscience or serves to teach.

CHAPTER ONE=BULLSHIT THAT HAPPENED
Henry watches Basil working on his picture of Dorian, and calls it his best work.
Basil says that he refuses to exhibit the work blah…blah
Henry takes the piss out of Basil.
Basil reveals that he has a deep adoration for Dorian.
Henry says he’d like to meet Dorian, Basil is reluctant due to Henry’s corrupting influence.

QUOTE ANALYSIS: BASIL
“sudden disappearance” “some time ago” “caused such public excitement” What does it show? Foreshadowing to the later great f*ck-up on Dorian’s behalf (Basil disappears, because Dorian slays him). It also shows the superficiality of Wilde’s contemporary society, which reflects a major theme in the novel.

QUOTE ANALYSIS: BASIL
“He, too, felt like we were destined to know each other”- Basil romanticising his and Dorian’s first encounter. Basil introduces Dorian as having a massive influence on his art, however, influence is immoral, and so is the outcome of Dorian’s influence.
HOMO-EROTICISM

QUOTE ANALYSIS: BASIL
“Don’t spoil him. Don’t try to influence him.”
Henry is amused by the idea that he could negatively influence Dorian, however later in the novel treats him as some kind of experiment/project. Basil seems to infer that this corrupting behaviour of Henry’s is frequent.
