The Negative Impact Of Being Overweight On People's Lives

Categories: Obesity

The results of the present study illustrated the overweight people interviewed had continual negative experiences that moods affected the quality of their life. The negative experiences were the consequences of obesity concerns, undesirable self-image perception, unhealthy lifestyle, and psychological pressure. The great understanding of the issue at hand revealed that being overweight is associated with negative experiences. Difficulties in day-to-day activities and challenges in doing personal tasks are just parts of this experience, which shows some troubles of obesity concerns. Additional aspects of this experience are physical pain, loss of social opportunities, and socio-psychological pressures.

The outcomes of this study are in company with other studies. For example, as far as the social stigma is concerned, other studies confirm this phenomenon in overweight people (De Brun A, McCarthy M, McKenzie K, McGloin, 2014; Lewis S, Thomas SL, Blood RW, Castle DJ, Hyde J, Komesaroff,2011).

Forsberg et al. showed that participants before removing fat surgery felt inferiority and shame related to their obesity (Forsberg A, Engstrom A, Soderberg S, 2014).

Stigmatization is a general experience in overweight people, especially women. Weight-related stigmatization and societal pressure on women can cause body image dissatisfaction (McInnes RJ, Gray, 2013). From a psychological perspective, as mentioned earlier, the participants showed a high rate of self-disregard, especially in body image. This correlates with the results of other studies on body-image dissatisfaction (BID)( AK Sadati, F Rahnavard, N Ebrahimzadeh, A Rezaei, 2016; Wilson RE, Latner JD, Hayashi, 2013). It can be argued that undesirable self-image perception leads to a variety of depressive tendencies in overweight, especially in women also it makes the living situation stressful for the women because they are living in a society in which thin bodies are appealing.

Results of the present study can be used by policymakers at all levels (AK Sadati, F Rahnavard, N Ebrahimzadeh, A Rezaei, 2016). They should consider the needs of this marginalized group. Promotion of coping strategies with cognitive therapy on one hand and social desensitization for obese women on the other are two main approaches that are proposed to decrease the social pressures that threaten obese people. The main finding of the current study is that women in Iran district recognize the multiple dimensions of the adverse effects of being overweight as it affects social life, physical and mental health, and self-image. Indeed, overweight individuals suffer name-calling and other embarrassing and stigmatizing behaviors as has been described before (Aryeetey RNO, 2016). Being thin is greatly valued within Western societies and a considerable number of adolescents with normal weight, especially girls, are trying to lose weight to achieve the socially endorsed ideal of a beautiful body (Jolanda S Van Vliet, Leena Rasanen, Per A Gustafsson and Nina Nelson, 2014).
