The Moment in My Life That Changed Everything I Have

In the 1920’s it was obligated to get married at age 17. One day my parents came up to me, while I was working and said “son you must get ready by next saturday you will get married to our friends daughter”. As soon as I heard them say that I was shocked, I was thinking in my head how could they do this to me, force me to marry someone I do not love. I immediately said, no I will not marry her; I don’t love her and you can’t force me to.

My Father then said you are already a grown man you will marry that young girl weather you want like it or not. At night when everyone was already asleep i thought to myself “ even if I do marry her I wont love her and then both of us will live unhappy and miserable for the rest of our lives”.

So I got up while my parents were sleeping and started packing clothes in an old leather bag and lifted my mattress to get 10 dollars I had been saving, from past jobs I did, I started making a rope out of my blankets and sheets so I could climb out of the window and not wake up my parents.

Before I started to climb down the window I started writing a short letter to my parents saying” Father and Mother if your reading this that means that I have left home, I couldn’t let you force me to marry someone I do not love and I knew if I stayed you would make me live my life with that girl, I don’t know when I will be back or if i will ever return but the only thing I can tell you is I love you both and I’m sorry.

I put the letter on my bed and took one last look on at my room before I left thinking to myself “this is the last time I will be here”. I started climbing down my house, as soon as I got on the ground and ran as fast as I could away from my home. I got tired of running, and I was close to a road, when i got to the road I walked slowly to catch my breath. After walking for a while someone on the road honked I looked back and a car was stopping.

The window started rolling down and I saw a lady’s face in the car and asked were I was going I said know where I’m just walking she said do you want a ride, I said sure since i had know where to go. So I got on and the lady said she was going into the city and asked if that’s where I was going I said yes. I was asleep for the entire car ride until the lady woke me up and said we are already here, I said thank you for the ride when I wa getting out of her car she said “do you have anywhere to stay” I said yes im staying with an uncle, obviously I was lying I knew that, in my head I didn’t know why I said that but I just did. As soon as she left I started walking down the street thinking what am I gonna do where am I going to live, I only had 10 dollars and i didnt know what am I going to do when those 10 dollars were gone. It was day and I was trying to find a place to sleep, I found a small alley the good thing is that a small part in the back that had a covering on top and i thought it perfect at least if it rained I wouldn’t get wet. I started getting hungry since I had some money I tried to find cheap food, as I was finding a cheap restaurant I found a hotel I went into the office to ask how much a night costed the man said” a night here costs 1 dollar, so I got a payed for a room and when to the cheap restaurant to get something to eat, I went inside and I sat down then a waitress approached to ask my order and i was amazed to find who it was.

It was the lady that had given me a ride when i was on the road, she was actually happy to see me and asked how I was doing I said fine and I was a little hungry” I was lying I was so hungry”. She said order anything you want and I did, I started ordering food, when I finished the lady brought the bill, I took out my money and I had to pay 1 dollar and 25 cents I was really hungry. But the lady said “ don’t worry i’ll pay for it” I said really but I can’t let you pay for all of this she said no it’s fine I said thank you I really needed this and I left the restaurant. As soon as i got out it was getting dark and started to rain, the good thing is that I had already rented out a hotel room for the night, so I rushed to my room as soon as I got inside I took my clothes off and took a shower. While I was taking a shower I was thinking what my parents are thinking or doing right know, when I got out I was so tired that fell right on the bed and fell asleep.

When I woke up I couldn’t believe that I had actually left my home and ran away, since i had to leave because my night was up, I got my things and left I went back to the cheap restaurant to eat breakfest thinking that the nice lady would be there. When I got there I didn’t see the lady there so I sat down and started eating, as soon as I was done and I left the store I saw the lady walking the down street and I approached her. I told her can I ask you some advice she said sure you can, I asked her if your parents force you to marry someone you don’t love just because they are rich does that mean they don’t care for your happiness. She said I don’t think so I think the reason they did it is because they thought that you could have a better life with the women you marry than with your parents, I think they did it because they love you, that made me realize that they did love me I said thank you to the nice lady and said to myself I have to go back home, and I started running to my home but then I turned back to the nice lady and asked her what is your name she smiled and said my name is Hope and then walked away. I ran as fast as I could back to my home and my parents were crying on the table and as soon as they saw who it was they ran to hug me and said” you had us worried sick, where were you, we love you so much son” and they asked why did you come back when you thought that we were making you marry because we wanted to, although we were doing it because we wanted the best for you, I said I came back because I had hope.
