The Legalization of Marijuana and How it's Effects on Health

Categories: Taxation

Marijuana, also known as cannabis, has always been a heated debate in recent years. The use of marijuana as a stimulant is banned almost everywhere. But with some changes, some nations, as well as several states in the United States, legalized the use of this cannabis. As the two sides of a problem, marijuana is legal or not, it is both supported and opposed by different groups of people. For many reasons, I would like to express the opinion that the United States should legalize cannabis for medical and recreational purposes.

The important reasons that are the limitations of marijuana prohibition, the cannabis will contribute to the economy if it is legalized, as well as the great benefits of marijuana in the health sector. So far, under federal law, possession of marijuana is still illegal in the United States, except in some cases. The reasons given for debating from both sides revolve around themes such as: social problems, economic benefits, health of the people.

Cannabis, also known as cannabis, is a neuropathic drug from the Cannabis plant that is used for medicinal or recreational purposes. Marijuana has a mental and physical effect, such as creating a "high" or "uplifting" sensation, general changes in consciousness, excitement, and increased appetite. The earliest recorded use of marijuana goes back to the 3rd millennium BC. Since the early 20th century, marijuana has been legally restricted. The possession, use, and sale of marijuana are illegal in most countries of the world. Most people who oppose the use of marijuana believe it can destabilize society, affect the economy, and harm human health.

Frist of all, it is unreasonable to ban marijuana, which is inherently difficult to cause social problems. Marijuana does not cause social issues, but the ban on marijuana has made things worse. In the past, alcohol and drugs have been banned in all parts of the world by the harmful effects it causes. But prohibiting substances is sometimes an agent of smuggling or criminal activity. For example, the United States has also issued a ban on alcohol (The US Congress passed the Volstead Act to allow the implementation of the alcohol law, which is mentioned in the 18th Amendment of the Constitution.)(1), but it has the opposite effect. The ban on alcohol has led to the rise in the price of alcohol and the sale of liquor to large profits. Mafia gangs smuggle liquor into the United States from several countries in the Americas (2). Organized crime groups are growing stronger so they are out of the control of law enforcement, even though they have acted drastically. Thus, the 21st Amendment of the Constitution was passed and ratified, formally abolishing the ban (3). Returning to the ban on marijuana, it also caused the same darkness. The ban has led to the smuggling of marijuana as well as criminal organizations. Preventing these criminal activities makes it difficult for government agencies. Therefore, should control marijuana as we control alcohol.

Besides that, the legalization of marijuana not only does not damage current economy but it also brings many great economic benefits to the US, it is the same way that the alcohol or tobacco industries is doing. In fact, since cannabis was legalized in several states by 2012, (4) this industry has grown exponentially and is set to become a boom in 2018 (5). Thanks to the licensing of marijuana as a form of entertainment on January 1, California became the sixth state in the United States. At the end of February, there were 12 signed marijuana agreements totaling $ 159.4 million (6). In particular, such a large industry would certainly bring great tax revenue to the government. California, which is the world's sixth-largest economy, is estimated to be worth billions of dollars each year and is expected to earn at least $ 1 billion in annual taxes (7). In addition collecting a large amount of taxes, it also helps the government save a lot of money to fight marijuana-related crimes like smuggling. The great economic benefits of marijuana make the US government consider legitimizing it.

Finally, health effects are the big reason given to prevent cannabis legalization; marijuana is not only does not harm as alcohol or narcotics, but also has a therapeutic effect. If the protection of human health is the main reason, marijuana is not a priority for the ban. Research has shown that cannabis harms far less than cigarettes. Cigarettes killed 1,200 people a day in 2000 (8). Meanwhile, marijuana has never been lethal (9). So before banning marijuana, we must ban cigarettes. Not only that, marijuana is also applied to medical methods. Medical marijuana can help relieve pain, nausea caused by chemotherapy in people with cancer and gain weight in HIV-AIDS patients (10). Some studies have also shown that cannabis can reduce epilepsy, particularly the reduction of epilepsy in children in epilepsy. As a result, medical needs also support the legalization of marijuana.
To sum up, the fact has shown that the need for legalization in order for the government to control social instability and to make use of the economic and medical values of cannabis. My opinions will not change for any reason. Cannabis benefits almost in terms of helping to solve the crime problem, economic growth as well as pharmaceuticals in health care. With these benefits I believe that the American people will choose the right thing. It also explains why 61% of Americans say marijuana use needs to be legitimized, which has been steadily increasing over the past decade.
