Overcoming Indecisiveness: A Path to a More Fulfilling Life

Shakespear's most tragic hero Hamlet questioned, “ To be or not to be”. So often we are unable to decide on choices we face in life, much like Hamlet. This is normal. The problem starts when the inability to make a decision becomes extreme. When this occurs, it has been proven to be disastrous unless fixed,(Pelusi,2009). The outcome for the chronic indecisive person is often a life filled with unhappiness, low self esteem, loss of time and money, and sometimes serious health problems.

The solution is to work at fixing this behavior before it gets out of control, and to do this we need to understand what causes indecision. Decisions are required in all aspects of life, no matter how simple it may be. For instance, deciding what to wear on a date or what color to paint your bathroom are simple decisions, but deciding what car to buy or if you should invest in a particular stock, are more intense.

These all require a thinking process which is pretty complex.

The thinking process requires other cognitive functions such as memory, assessment of risk, knowledge of outcome, motivation and reasoning, (Sukanya, 2009). Indecisiveness is a basic term that means the inability to make decisions, and is a common condition we experience in various phases in our lives, usually when we are faced with challenges,(Phylameana, 2011). Decision makers can be classified in two extreme groups. One who decides on impulse and later may wish they had made a better choice , and the second group of people are paralyzed and suffer from chronic indecision(charminghealth.

om, 2011). One of the most common reasons for being indecisive is the fear of responsibility. When you decide, then you have to face consequences. It is this fear that makes many individuals avoid making any decisions, and often avoiding decision making situations. People suffering from this need to realize that being wrong or making a wrong choice is OK, in fact very common. More importantly, they must begin working to fix this issue before it takes over their life(Nithyarand, 2009).

Another common cause of indecisiveness is situations in ones life that have been traumatic, or fearful, stressful relationships which caused poor self image and or abuse. These examples are usually deep rooted in our minds and nurtured by excessive negative emotions(charminghealth. com, 2011). These negative emotions are powerful and can debilitate lives extremely quick by causing emotional imbalance, mental instability, frustration, anger, and many other problems, which all ultimately lead to poor health(Nithyarand, 2009).

Much of our worry about making decisions stems from our irrational and impossible need for certainty. Of course making a good decision is important, but when we become obsessive with that need, then we not only get indecisive, but we worry about any decision we do make. This problem has very much affected my life the past couple of years, and from experience I can defiantly agree that the stress and fear that comes with serious indecisiveness can overcome your entire life.

There is one sure way to solve this dilemma and that is to first remember that decision making is not about making the one perfect solution. It is about making the best of a deal- every decision has it's pros and cons,(Sukanya,2009). The right to choose is a basic human right , we need to remember this. It is said that the essence of human life lies with the freedom to choose. This freedom, to choose to do what we want, gives our life meaning and it further helps us to define our purpose of living, (Sukanya,2009).

So in conclusion, the indecisive person has to believe that it is OK to mess up sometimes, and there is absolutely no such thing as a perfect decision. Let's make the best of the deal, and hopefully one day look forward to making more decisions.
