There are many different forms of art that an artist can choose to express them emotionally. One of these forms of art is writing. When art and literature is compared they seem to share some of the same components. These include a structure, a tone, and a theme. In Robert Frost’s poem “Home Burial” he writes about a couple that are grieving over the loss of a child, and the breakdown of communication that adds to the troubles the couple is having.
The author uses his speech to paint a picture in our imagination that conveys the pain from an experience he and his family had to endure.
Through his words we are able to into the aftermath of emotions people feel when dealing with death. He expresses the importance of communication, and understanding within a marriage. While reading this poem the reader can through Robert Frost’s words see the scenario, and pain played out in their minds. Art is being able to speak without speaking, and to allow the beholder to interpret that work of art in a way that may speak to their hearts, and sensibilities. Literature is an art; it expresses feelings, struggles, successes, and failures.
Literature gives insight into political, and societal oppression. In Ezra Pounds “In a Station of a Metro” she uses her words to encourage readers to use their memory to Visualize a scenario that could be seen vividly by those who can relate to her setting of choice. Charlotte Perkins-Gilman uses literature to paint a mental picture of oppression off women in the 19th century. These works use theme, tone, and structure to bring the reader to the point where they can understand the reasoning, and meaning behind the work.
The structure of the mentioned works varies in style; the end result of the works is to help the reader have a better understanding of our world. Many times a common tool in literature is the use of symbols. In Charlotte Perkins Gilman work “The Yellow Wallpaper”, she uses the wallpaper as a symbol to represent something that is having an emotional effect on her. The wallpaper is used to tell a story about some of the domestic suppression faced by some women, and how this suppression is manifested.
To be able to use words in such a way to demonstrate this theme is an art. The message the author is attempting to demonstrate can be a hard one to understand. She does this through symbolism, conversation flow, and the narrator is talking to herself, she uses her own introspection to keep the reader engaged. The tone of the authors’ conversation with her helps the reader to understand the mental anguish she is going through. It is a fascinating look into the mind of the narrator, who is experiencing anxiety, and depression while trying to maintain the “good wife” image.
Domestic pressures on top of already underlying anxiety, and depression can cause a woman to go insane. I can understand, and relate to this literary work because I also struggle with my own anxiety, and depression. Domestic pressures seem to be a common theme in various forms of art. In Robert Frost’s “Home Burial” the couple he writes about. Unlike “The Yellow Wallpaper” this poem is mostly the conversation between the couple, we the audience are witnessing the exchange. This poem is not only about the death of a child, also the death of a marriage.
The different ways of grieving are evident in the authors use have phrasing, and vocabulary. The wife is surrounded by grief. Her world, and her loss is all she sees at this point. The husband working through his grief, he did this by physically exerting some of the emotions he was feeling. He took on the task of burying his child, through this act he may have made his peace, and gained closure. This poem demonstrates how easily communication can break or make a relationship. Neither way of grieving displayed is expressed as right or wrong, a parent can grieve any way they want.
However, this couple lost sight of the fact that not only are they parents, they are also a husband, and a wife in pain. They lost sight of how to be there for each other. She fails to take into consideration how he must have felt burying their child. He felt she was over reacting. The lack of empathy, and grief led to the miscommunication in the poem. This is a very sad poem; the author may have used literature to help him through his own loss of four children at young ages. The expression of pain through poetry could have been very therapeutic
for the author. In conclusion, the study of literature is vital today in many different fields of study. The quote “Literature is an art, and as an art it is able to enlarge and refine our understanding of life” rings very true for many students of life. We are able to see many different perspectives of situations, and how those situations affect those involved, the emotions involved are transferred from the author to the reader through paper. Many times the words can have great profound impact on the reader. This is why the study of literature is important.
