The Importance of Coral Reefs Protection

Many people in the world know what a coral reef but doesn’t really know what is happening to them. A coral reef is basically it is an underwater ecosystem. Coral reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. Coral polyps is Coral polyps are tiny, soft-bodied organisms related to sea anemones and jellyfish. Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound in a coral, the short way of saying is CaCO3. The chemical combination involves are calcium which is Ca, carbon is C and oxygen is O.

It is a common substance found as rock in all parts of the world and is the main component of seashells, snails, and eggshells. Now coral reefs are starting to die and become endangered, the main reason is climate change. Researchers found that if coral reefs are dying then the chances of a tsunami are increased by 97%! Coral reefs are found in the picture below around the world you can imagine how many tsunamis will happen.

‘Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's need but not every man's greediness’ claims Mahatma Gandhi. ‘If people really think money is more important than the environment then tell them to hold their breath and count their money’ states McPherson.

Coral reefs are also being endangered by many reasons. The list of problems can seem to go on forever. Some examples are, overfishing, fishing using cyanide and dynamite, pollution from sewage and agriculture, invasive species. One We almost eat fish every week but do we really know what it is doing to the environment.

Targeted fishing of top predators for example sharks, at the end it messes up the marine biodiversities balance and flows which will cause a large amount of smaller marine animals at the bottom of the food chain to overpopulate. This has impacts on the rest of the marine ecosystem and community, such as the increased growth of algae and threats to coral reef health. A problem with climate change is that we have known it for a really long time and we have not done anything to stop it. For example, we still eat a lot of meat even though if everyone became a vegetarian it would save the world they rather eat meat and kill the earth.

A solution can be to stop climate change. By stop climate changes I mean like stop eating meat and use the metro instead of using a car or a taxi. The really main reason is that the temperature is rising and the coral reef doesn’t really like the temperature because they are really close to the surface so they start dying.. If we do meatless Monday then it will save the coral reefs. But you might say that why is meatless Monday the solution to every problem well it is because cows produce most of the methane in climate change so if we decrease the amount of methane and the amount of rain forest being cut down because of cattle grazing. We, humans, have done nothing good for the environment we have just come and killed everything that is helping us and our only home. People might say that if we move to mars than we will become safe. Actually like Einstein said “ The world will not be destroyed by the evil people but by the people that watch & do ”
