The Hunger Games
When the author writes a novel we are placed in the main character’s shoes and faced with their emotions, a good author is able to show the reader the progress the main character is faced with. A main characters ability to develop throughout a novel with strengths and weaknesses in different situations helps them grow using their survival, social, and physical skills. In this novel The Hunger Games, the main character has gone through many ups and downs, which has lead her to develop in many ways, during this essay we will be assessing how Suzanne Collins addresses the development of the main character Katniss Everdeen.
These are some examples of how Katniss has developed her survival skills during the Hunger Games; when being faced with a situation that consists of one dying in a game the first skill you usually go to are your survival skills, so that you stay alive throughout the game. Katniss went into the games with a small advantage because her father had taught her hunting skills as a child. “My father knew and he taught me some before he was blown to bits in a mine explosion. ” (Collins, 5) This quote shows that Katniss gained hunting skills and was able to take that skill into the game with her.
The pages were made of old parchment and covered in ink drawings of plants. Neat handwritten blocks told their names, where to gather them, when they came in bloom, their medical uses. But my father added other entries to the book. Plants for eating, not healing. ” Katniss gained knowledge of flowers and herbs that she could make use to eat when she didn’t have enough food. Katniss has a full advantage over the others because the people of district 12 generally do not have enough to eat where on the other hand, the Careers have had a lifetime of being fully fed, and they are at a disadvantage.
This has prepared Katniss for the toughest days in the game without food. Surviving isn’t just going around killing people; you must be able to get food for yourself to keep alive by hunting or by having eatable plants and herbs, also to have a good shelter. During the Hunger Games each tribute is on their own, and sees even their own ‘partner’ as a treat in the end. Therefore, Katniss is forced to be alone making her social skills lower. She does not get to interact with others as she did with Gale in district 12, their long walks nd spending the entire day together brought her closer to someone, and she has the chance of losing him if she doesn’t win the games. “In the woods wait the only person with whom I can be myself. Gale. (Collins, 6)” Being with this character Gale makes the work easier for her because between the two she doesn’t have to hunt as much, they split the gathered food. When in the games, she is alone it makes hunting and surviving much harder than in District 12. “I want to be high, like in the hills around District 12, where I can see my enemies approaching.
But I have no choice but to keep going. (Collins, 152)” This quote explains how Katniss is alone majority of the games and is forced to always be aware and alert of her surroundings. Throughout the Hunger Games Katniss is able to develop physically in two ways; becoming physically weak, unhealthy and gains more experience fighting. Katniss becomes weaker in health as the days go by in the Games; she only notices this after coming home from the Game. “But when I look at my naked body in the mirror, all I can see is how skinny I am.
I mean, I’m sure I was worse when I came out of the arena, but I can easily count my ribs. (Collins, 353)” This quote is when Katniss comes back after the games and only then does she realize how bad of a state her body is in, being distracted with surviving she forgot the condition her body was in. Katniss gains much more experience fighting with the other tributes during the Games. “When thresh whirls around on me, the rock raised, I know it’s no good to run. And my bow is empty, the last loaded arrow having hone in cloves direction. I’m trapped in the glare of his strange golden brown eyes. Collins, 287)” this quote shows one of the situations that she has faced while being in the Games and she has gotten through and survived to win the Hunger Games. A main characters ability to develop throughout a novel with strengths and weaknesses in different situations helps them grow using their survival, social, and physical skills. Suzanne Collins has used many opportunities throughout the novel to show that Katniss Everdeen is able to develop. Many times she has shown in the Games where she has developed in her own ways and social, survival, and physical skills.
